Now faith is assurance of things hoped for, proof of things not seen.

For by this, the elders obtained approval.
- 3
By faith we understand that the universe has been framed by the word of God, so that what is seen has not been made out of things which are visible.
- 4
By faith Abel offered to God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, through which he had testimony given to him that he was righteous, God testifying with respect to his gifts; and through it he, being dead, still speaks.
- 5
By faith Enoch was taken away, so that he wouldn’t see death, and he was not found, because God translated him. For he has had testimony given to him that before his translation he had been well pleasing to God.

Without faith it is impossible to be well pleasing to him, for he who comes to God must believe that he exists, and that he is a rewarder of those who seek him.

By faith Noah, being warned about things not yet seen, moved with godly fear, prepared a ship for the saving of his house, through which he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness which is according to faith.

By faith Abraham, when he was called, obeyed to go out to the place which he was to receive for an inheritance. He went out, not knowing where he went.

By faith he lived as an alien in the land of promise, as in a land not his own, dwelling in tents with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise.

For he was looking for the city which has foundations, whose builder and maker is God.
- 11
By faith even Sarah herself received power to conceive, and she bore a child when she was past age, since she counted him faithful who had promised.
- 12
Therefore as many as the stars of the sky in multitude, and as innumerable as the sand which is by the sea shore, were fathered by one man, and him as good as dead.

These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them and embraced them from afar, and having confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth.

For those who say such things make it clear that they are seeking a country of their own.
- 15
If indeed they had been thinking of that country from which they went out, they would have had enough time to return.
- 16
But now they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed of them, to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them.

By faith, Abraham, being tested, offered up Isaac. Yes, he who had gladly received the promises was offering up his only born son,
- 18
to whom it was said, “Your offspring will be accounted as from Isaac,”
- 19
concluding that God is able to raise up even from the dead. Figuratively speaking, he also did receive him back from the dead.

By faith Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau, even concerning things to come.
- 21
By faith Jacob, when he was dying, blessed each of the sons of Joseph, and worshiped, leaning on the top of his staff.
- 22
By faith Joseph, when his end was near, made mention of the departure of the children of Israel, and gave instructions concerning his bones.
- 23
By faith Moses, when he was born, was hidden for three months by his parents, because they saw that he was a beautiful child; and they were not afraid of the king’s commandment.

By faith Moses, when he had grown up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter,
- 25
choosing rather to share ill treatment with God’s people than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a time,
- 26
considering the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures of Egypt; for he looked to the reward.
- 27
By faith he left Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king; for he endured, as seeing him who is invisible.
- 28
By faith he kept the Passover and the sprinkling of the blood, that the destroyer of the firstborn should not touch them.
- 29
By faith they passed through the Red Sea as on dry land. When the Egyptians tried to do so, they were swallowed up.

By faith the walls of Jericho fell down after they had been encircled for seven days.
- 31
By faith Rahab the prostitute didn’t perish with those who were disobedient, having received the spies in peace.
- 32
What more shall I say? For the time would fail me if I told of Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, David, Samuel, and the prophets—
- 33
who through faith subdued kingdoms, worked out righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions,
- 34
quenched the power of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, from weakness were made strong, grew mighty in war, and caused foreign armies to flee.

Women received their dead by resurrection. Others were tortured, not accepting their deliverance, that they might obtain a better resurrection.
- 36
Others were tried by mocking and scourging, yes, moreover by bonds and imprisonment.
- 37
They were stoned. They were sawn apart. They were tempted. They were slain with the sword. They went around in sheep skins and in goat skins; being destitute, afflicted, ill-treated—
- 38
of whom the world was not worthy—wandering in deserts, mountains, caves, and the holes of the earth.

These all, having been commended for their faith, didn’t receive the promise,
- 40
God having provided some better thing concerning us, so that apart from us they should not be made perfect.

Ora, a fé é a certeza daquilo que esperamos, a prova das coisas que não se veem.

Pois por meio dela os antigos obtiveram aprovação.
- 3
Pela fé entendemos que o universo foi formado pela palavra de Deus, de modo que o que se vê não foi feito do que é visível.

Pela fé Abel ofereceu a Deus um sacrifício mais excelente do que Caim, por meio do qual obteve testemunho de que era justo, pois Deus testemunhou a respeito de suas ofertas; e, por meio dela, mesmo morto, ele ainda fala.

Pela fé Enoque foi levado, para que não visse a morte, e não foi encontrado, porque Deus o trasladou. Pois antes de sua trasladação, ele obteve testemunho de que havia agradado a Deus.

Sem fé é impossível agradar a ele, pois aquele que se aproxima de Deus deve crer que ele existe e que é recompensador daqueles que o buscam.

Pela fé Noé, sendo avisado sobre coisas que ainda não se viam, movido por santo temor, preparou uma arca para a salvação de sua família, por meio da qual ele condenou o mundo e se tornou herdeiro da justiça que vem segundo a fé.

Pela fé Abraão, quando foi chamado, obedeceu e saiu para o lugar que haveria de receber como herança. Ele saiu, sem saber para onde ia.

Pela fé ele viveu como estrangeiro na terra da promessa, como em uma terra que não era sua, habitando em tendas com Isaque e Jacó, coerdeiros com ele da mesma promessa.

Pois ele esperava a cidade que tem alicerces, cujo arquiteto e construtor é Deus.
- 11
Pela fé a própria Sara recebeu poder para conceber, e deu à luz um filho quando já havia passado da idade, pois considerou fiel aquele que havia prometido.
- 12
Portanto, de um só homem, e este já como morto, foram gerados descendentes tão numerosos como as estrelas do céu e inumeráveis como a areia que está na praia do mar.
- 13
Todos estes morreram na fé, sem ter recebido as promessas, mas tendo-as visto e abraçado de longe, e tendo confessado que eram estrangeiros e peregrinos na terra.
- 14
Pois os que dizem tais coisas deixam claro que estão buscando uma pátria para si.
- 15
Se, de fato, estivessem pensando naquela pátria de onde saíram, teriam tido tempo suficiente para voltar.
- 16
Mas agora eles desejam uma pátria melhor, isto é, uma celestial. Portanto, Deus não se envergonha deles, de ser chamado o seu Deus, pois preparou uma cidade para eles.

Pela fé, Abraão, sendo provado, ofereceu Isaque. Sim, aquele que havia recebido as promessas com alegria estava oferecendo o seu filho unigênito ,
- 18
a quem foi dito: “A sua descendência será considerada a partir de Isaque,”
- 19
concluindo que Deus é poderoso para ressuscitar até mesmo dentre os mortos. Figurativamente falando, ele também o recebeu de volta dentre os mortos.
- 20
Pela fé Isaque abençoou Jacó e Esaú, até mesmo a respeito das coisas que estavam por vir.
- 21
Pela fé Jacó, quando estava morrendo, abençoou cada um dos filhos de José, e adorou, apoiando-se no topo do seu cajado.
- 22
Pela fé José, quando o seu fim estava próximo, fez menção da saída dos filhos de Israel e deu instruções a respeito dos seus ossos.
- 23
Pela fé Moisés, quando nasceu, foi escondido por três meses por seus pais, porque viram que ele era um menino formoso; e eles não tiveram medo do mandamento do rei.

Pela fé Moisés, quando já era adulto, recusou ser chamado filho da filha de Faraó,
- 25
escolhendo antes ser maltratado com o povo de Deus do que desfrutar dos prazeres do pecado por algum tempo,
- 26
considerando o opróbrio de Cristo riquezas maiores do que os tesouros do Egito; pois ele olhava para a recompensa.
- 27
Pela fé ele deixou o Egito, não temendo a ira do rei; pois ele perseverou, como quem vê aquele que é invisível.
- 28
Pela fé ele celebrou a Páscoa e a aspersão do sangue, para que o destruidor dos primogênitos não tocasse neles.
- 29
Pela fé eles passaram pelo Mar Vermelho como em terra seca. Quando os egípcios tentaram fazer o mesmo, foram engolidos.
- 30
Pela fé as muralhas de Jericó caíram, depois de terem sido rodeadas por sete dias.
- 31
Pela fé Raabe, a prostituta, não pereceu com os desobedientes, tendo recebido os espiões em paz.
- 32
E o que mais direi? Pois me faltaria o tempo se eu contasse de Gideão, Baraque, Sansão, Jefté, Davi, Samuel e os profetas—
- 33
os quais, por meio da fé, subjugaram reinos, praticaram a justiça, alcançaram promessas, fecharam as bocas de leões,
- 34
apagaram o poder do fogo, escaparam do fio da espada, da fraqueza tiraram força, tornaram-se poderosos na guerra e puseram em fuga exércitos estrangeiros.

Mulheres receberam seus mortos pela ressurreição. Outros foram torturados, não aceitando o seu livramento, para que pudessem alcançar uma ressurreição melhor.

Outros foram provados por zombarias e açoites, sim, e ainda por algemas e prisões.
- 37
Foram apedrejados. Foram serrados ao meio. Foram tentados. Foram mortos ao fio da espada. Andaram vestidos de peles de ovelhas e de peles de cabras; necessitados, afligidos e maltratados—
- 38
dos quais o mundo não era digno—vagando por desertos, montanhas, cavernas e buracos da terra.
- 39
Todos estes, tendo recebido bom testemunho por sua fé, não receberam a promessa,
- 40
pois Deus havia provido algo melhor a nosso respeito, para que, sem nós, eles não fossem aperfeiçoados.
