Hosea 9
Don't celebrate, Hosea warns at harvest time: the threshing floor and winepress will fail, and exile looms, back to Egypt and on to Assyria, where food itself becomes unclean. The festal joy of the agricultural calendar is cancelled. The heaviest blows fall on fertility itself. Ephraim's glory flies off like a bird, and the curse turns to wombs and breasts (vv.11-14). A bitter memory anchors it: Israel was once like fresh grapes, until Baal Peor.

Don’t rejoice, Israel, to jubilation like the nations; for you were unfaithful to your God. You love the wages of a prostitute at every grain threshing floor.

The threshing floor and the wine press won’t feed them, and the new wine will fail her.

They won’t dwell in the LORD’s land; but Ephraim will return to Egypt, and they will eat unclean food in Assyria.

They won’t pour out wine offerings to the LORD, neither will they be pleasing to him. Their sacrifices will be to them like the bread of mourners; all who eat of it will be polluted; for their bread will be for their appetite. It will not come into the LORD’s house.

What will you do in the day of solemn assembly, and in the day of the feast of the LORD?

For, behold, when they flee destruction, Egypt will gather them up. Memphis will bury them. Nettles will possess their pleasant things of silver. Thorns will be in their tents.

The days of visitation have come. The days of reckoning have come. Israel will consider the prophet to be a fool, and the man who is inspired to be insane, because of the abundance of your sins, and because your hostility is great.

A prophet watches over Ephraim with my God. A fowler’s snare is on all of his paths, and hostility in the house of his God.

They have deeply corrupted themselves, as in the days of Gibeah. He will remember their iniquity. He will punish them for their sins.

I found Israel like grapes in the wilderness. I saw your fathers as the first ripe in the fig tree at its first season; but they came to Baal Peor, and consecrated themselves to the shameful thing, and became abominable like that which they loved.

As for Ephraim, their glory will fly away like a bird. There will be no birth, no one with child, and no conception.

Though they bring up their children, yet I will bereave them, so that not a man shall be left. Indeed, woe also to them when I depart from them!

I have seen Ephraim, like Tyre, planted in a pleasant place; but Ephraim will bring out his children to the murderer.

Give them—LORD what will you give? Give them a miscarrying womb and dry breasts.

“All their wickedness is in Gilgal; for there I hated them. Because of the wickedness of their deeds, I will drive them out of my house! I will love them no more. All their princes are rebels.

Ephraim is struck. Their root has dried up. They will bear no fruit. Even though they give birth, yet I will kill the beloved ones of their womb.”

My God will cast them away, because they didn’t listen to him; and they will be wanderers among the nations.

Pois, eis que, quando fugirem da destruição, o Egito os recolherá. Mênfis os sepultará. Urtigas possuirão suas coisas preciosas de prata. Espinhos estarão em suas tendas.

Os dias de visitação chegaram. Os dias de retribuição chegaram. Israel considerará o profeta um tolo, e o homem inspirado, um louco, por causa da abundância dos seus pecados, e porque a sua hostilidade é grande.

Um profeta vigia sobre Efraim com o meu Deus. Um laço de passarinheiro está em todos os seus caminhos, e hostilidade na casa do seu Deus.

Eles se corromperam profundamente, como nos dias de Gibeá. Ele se lembrará da iniquidade deles. Ele os punirá por seus pecados.

Eu encontrei Israel como uvas no deserto. Eu vi seus pais como os primeiros frutos maduros na figueira em sua primeira estação; mas eles foram a Baal-Peor, e se consagraram àquela coisa vergonhosa, e se tornaram abomináveis como aquilo que amaram.

Quanto a Efraim, a sua glória voará como um pássaro. Não haverá nascimento, ninguém grávida, e nenhuma concepção.

Ainda que criem seus filhos, contudo eu os deixarei sem filhos, de modo que não reste nenhum homem. De fato, ai deles também quando eu me afastar deles!

Eu vi Efraim, como Tiro, plantado em um lugar agradável; mas Efraim levará seus filhos ao assassino.

Dá-lhes — SENHOR, o que lhes darás? Dá-lhes um ventre que aborta e seios secos.

“Toda a maldade deles está em Gilgal; pois ali eu os odiei. Por causa da maldade de suas ações, eu os expulsarei da minha casa! Não os amarei mais. Todos os seus príncipes são rebeldes.

Efraim está ferido. Sua raiz secou. Eles não darão fruto. Mesmo que deem à luz, ainda assim matarei os amados do seu ventre.”

Meu Deus os rejeitará, porque não o ouviram; e eles serão errantes entre as nações.
Fertility turned to barrenness
Hosea's marriage theme reaches a grim climax. The land that should overflow with grain and wine is made barren, and the curse extends to childbearing, no conception, bereavement even of children raised.
The reversal is sharpened by memory. God found Israel "like grapes in the wilderness" (v.10), fresh and promising, before they consecrated themselves at Baal Peor and grew as detestable as the thing they loved. Gibeah (v.9) recalls another old depth of corruption.
