Jeremiah 14

A drought sets the scene: gates languish, nobles send servants to find only empty cisterns, the doe abandons her fawn for lack of grass. The land's thirst becomes a confession of guilt, and the people plead with God not to act "as a foreigner" passing one night in their land. Watch how the chapter alternates voices — the people's prayer, God's flat refusal, the prophet's protest — building toward a question about who else but the LORD could ever send rain.

This is the LORD’s word that came to Jeremiah concerning the drought:

“Judah mourns, and its gates languish. They sit in black on the ground. The cry of Jerusalem goes up.
3
Their nobles send their little ones to the waters. They come to the cisterns, and find no water. They return with their vessels empty. They are disappointed and confounded, and cover their heads.
4
Because of the ground which is cracked, because no rain has been in the land, the plowmen are disappointed. They cover their heads.
5
Yes, the doe in the field also calves and forsakes her young, because there is no grass.
6
The wild donkeys stand on the bare heights. They pant for air like jackals. Their eyes fail, because there is no vegetation.
7
Though our iniquities testify against us, work for your name’s sake, LORD; for our rebellions are many. We have sinned against you.
8
You hope of Israel, its Savior in the time of trouble, why should you be as a foreigner in the land, and as a wayfaring man who turns aside to stay for a night?
9
Why should you be like a scared man, as a mighty man who can’t save? Yet you, LORD, are in the middle of us, and we are called by your name. Don’t leave us.
10
The LORD says to this people: “Even so they have loved to wander. They have not restrained their feet. Therefore the LORD does not accept them. Now he will remember their iniquity, and punish them for their sins.”

The LORD said to me, “Don’t pray for this people for their good.
12
When they fast, I will not hear their cry; and when they offer burnt offering and meal offering, I will not accept them; but I will consume them by the sword, by famine, and by pestilence.”
13
Then I said, “Ah, Lord GOD! Behold, the prophets tell them, ‘You will not see the sword, neither will you have famine; but I will give you assured peace in this place.’”
14
Then the LORD said to me, “The prophets prophesy lies in my name. I didn’t send them. I didn’t command them. I didn’t speak to them. They prophesy to you a lying vision, divination, and a thing of nothing, and the deceit of their own heart.
15
Therefore the LORD says concerning the prophets who prophesy in my name, but I didn’t send them, yet they say, ‘Sword and famine will not be in this land.’ Those prophets will be consumed by sword and famine.
16
The people to whom they prophesy will be cast out in the streets of Jerusalem because of the famine and the sword. They will have no one to bury them—them, their wives, their sons, or their daughters, for I will pour their wickedness on them.
17
“You shall say this word to them: “‘Let my eyes run down with tears night and day, and let them not cease; for the virgin daughter of my people is broken with a great breach, with a very grievous wound.
18
If I go out into the field, then behold, the slain with the sword! If I enter into the city, then behold, those who are sick with famine! For both the prophet and the priest go about in the land, and have no knowledge.’”
19
Have you utterly rejected Judah? Has your soul loathed Zion? Why have you struck us, and there is no healing for us? We looked for peace, but no good came; and for a time of healing, and behold, dismay!
20
We acknowledge, LORD, our wickedness, and the iniquity of our fathers; for we have sinned against you.
21
Do not abhor us, for your name’s sake. Do not disgrace the throne of your glory. Remember, and don’t break your covenant with us.
22
Are there any among the vanities of the nations that can cause rain? Or can the sky give showers? Aren’t you he, the LORD our God? Therefore we will wait for you; for you have made all these things.

“Judá está de luto, e as suas portas definham. Eles se assentam no chão, de luto. O clamor de Jerusalém sobe.

Seus nobres mandam seus servos às águas. Eles vão às cisternas, e não encontram água. Eles voltam com seus cântaros vazios. Ficam decepcionados e confundidos, e cobrem as suas cabeças.

Por causa do solo que está rachado, porque não houve chuva na terra, os lavradores estão decepcionados. Eles cobrem as suas cabeças.

Sim, até a corça no campo dá à luz e abandona a sua cria, porque não há pasto.

Os jumentos selvagens ficam nas colinas áridas. Eles ofegam por ar como os chacais. Seus olhos desfalecem, porque não há vegetação.

Embora as nossas iniquidades testifiquem contra nós, aja por amor do seu nome, SENHOR; pois as nossas rebeliões são muitas. Nós pecamos contra o Senhor.

Ó Esperança de Israel, seu Salvador no tempo da angústia, por que o Senhor seria como um estrangeiro na terra, e como um viajante que se desvia apenas para passar a noite?

Por que seria como um homem assustado, como um guerreiro que não pode salvar? Contudo, o Senhor está no meio de nós, e nós somos chamados pelo seu nome. Não nos abandone.”

Assim diz o SENHOR a este povo: “Eles amaram vagar por aí. Não contiveram os seus pés. Portanto, o SENHOR não os aceita. Agora ele se lembrará da iniquidade deles, e os punirá por seus pecados.”

O SENHOR me disse: “Não ore pelo bem deste povo.
12
Quando eles jejuarem, não ouvirei o seu clamor; e quando oferecerem holocausto e oferta de cereais, não os aceitarei; mas eu os consumirei pela espada, pela fome e pela peste.”
13
Então eu disse: “Ah, Senhor DEUS! Eis que os profetas lhes dizem: 'Vocês não verão a espada, nem terão fome; mas eu lhes darei paz garantida neste lugar'.”
14
Então o SENHOR me disse: “Os profetas profetizam mentiras em meu nome. Eu não os enviei. Eu não lhes dei ordem. Eu não falei com eles. Eles profetizam para vocês uma visão mentirosa, adivinhação, uma coisa inútil e o engano do seu próprio coração.
15
Portanto, assim diz o SENHOR a respeito dos profetas que profetizam em meu nome, embora eu não os tenha enviado, e que dizem: 'Espada e fome não haverá nesta terra'. Esses profetas serão consumidos pela espada e pela fome.
16
O povo a quem eles profetizam será lançado nas ruas de Jerusalém por causa da fome e da espada. Não terão ninguém para sepultá-los — nem a eles, nem às suas esposas, nem aos seus filhos, nem às suas filhas, pois derramarei sobre eles a sua própria maldade.

“Você dirá a eles esta palavra: “'Que os meus olhos derramem lágrimas de noite e de dia, e que elas não cessem; pois a virgem filha do meu povo foi despedaçada com um grande golpe, com uma ferida muito grave.
18
Se eu saio ao campo, eis os mortos à espada! Se eu entro na cidade, eis os que estão doentes de fome! Pois tanto o profeta quanto o sacerdote vagam pela terra, e não têm conhecimento.'”

O Senhor rejeitou totalmente a Judá? A sua alma detestou a Sião? Por que nos feriu, a ponto de não haver cura para nós? Esperávamos a paz, mas nenhum bem veio; e por um tempo de cura, e eis a consternação!
20
Nós reconhecemos, SENHOR, a nossa maldade, e a iniquidade dos nossos pais; pois pecamos contra o Senhor.
21
Não nos despreze, por amor do seu nome. Não desonre o trono da sua glória. Lembre-se, e não quebre a sua aliança conosco.
22
Há algum entre os ídolos vãos das nações que possa fazer chover? Ou podem os céus dar chuvas? Não é o Senhor, ó SENHOR nosso Deus? Portanto, nós esperaremos no Senhor; pois o Senhor fez todas estas coisas.

The lying prophets

When God forbids Jeremiah to pray for the people's good, the prophet objects: other prophets are promising "assured peace," telling the people they will see neither sword nor famine. God's answer is severe — he never sent them; they speak "the deceit of their own heart," and they will perish by the very sword and famine they denied.

This clash over false assurance is a thread running through the surrounding chapters, and it sharpens the tragedy: the people are being comforted to death even as the drought already testifies against them.
