Job again took up his parable, and said,
- 2
“Oh that I were as in the months of old, as in the days when God watched over me;
- 3
when his lamp shone on my head, and by his light I walked through darkness,
- 4
as I was in my prime, when the friendship of God was in my tent,
- 5
when the Almighty was yet with me, and my children were around me,
- 6
when my steps were washed with butter, and the rock poured out streams of oil for me,
- 7
when I went out to the city gate, when I prepared my seat in the street.
- 8
The young men saw me and hid themselves. The aged rose up and stood.
- 9
The princes refrained from talking, and laid their hand on their mouth.
- 10
The voice of the nobles was hushed, and their tongue stuck to the roof of their mouth.
- 11
For when the ear heard me, then it blessed me, and when the eye saw me, it commended me,
- 12
because I delivered the poor who cried, and the fatherless also, who had no one to help him,
- 13
the blessing of him who was ready to perish came on me, and I caused the widow’s heart to sing for joy.
- 14
I put on righteousness, and it clothed me. My justice was as a robe and a diadem.
- 15
I was eyes to the blind, and feet to the lame.
- 16
I was a father to the needy. I researched the cause of him whom I didn’t know.
- 17
I broke the jaws of the unrighteous and plucked the prey out of his teeth.
- 18
Then I said, ‘I will die in my own house, I will count my days as the sand.
- 19
My root is spread out to the waters. The dew lies all night on my branch.
- 20
My glory is fresh in me. My bow is renewed in my hand.’

“Men listened to me, waited, and kept silence for my counsel.
- 22
After my words they didn’t speak again. My speech fell on them.
- 23
They waited for me as for the rain. Their mouths drank as with the spring rain.
- 24
I smiled on them when they had no confidence. They didn’t reject the light of my face.

I chose out their way, and sat as chief. I lived as a king in the army, as one who comforts the mourners.

“Ah, quem me dera ser como nos meses passados, como nos dias em que Deus me guardava;
- 3
quando a sua lâmpada brilhava sobre a minha cabeça, e pela sua luz eu caminhava pelas trevas;
- 4
como eu era no meu vigor, quando a amizade de Deus estava na minha tenda,
- 5
quando o Todo-Poderoso ainda estava comigo, e os meus filhos estavam ao meu redor,
- 6
quando os meus passos eram lavados com manteiga, e a rocha me derramava correntes de azeite,
- 7
quando eu saía para a porta da cidade, quando eu preparava o meu assento na praça.
- 8
Os jovens me viam e se escondiam. Os idosos se levantavam e ficavam de pé.
- 9
Os príncipes se abstinham de falar, e punham a mão sobre a boca.
- 10
A voz dos nobres se calava, e a sua língua se apegava ao céu da boca.
- 11
Pois quando o ouvido me ouvia, ele me abençoava, e quando o olho me via, ele me aprovava,
- 12
porque eu livrava o pobre que clamava, e também o órfão, que não tinha quem o ajudasse.
- 13
A bênção daquele que estava prestes a perecer vinha sobre mim, e eu fazia o coração da viúva cantar de alegria.
- 14
Eu me vestia de retidão, e ela me cobria. A minha justiça era como um manto e um diadema.
- 15
Eu era olhos para o cego, e pés para o coxo.
- 16
Eu era um pai para os necessitados. Eu investigava a causa daquele que eu não conhecia.
- 17
Eu quebrava os queixos do injusto e arrancava a presa dos seus dentes.
- 18
Então eu dizia: 'Morrerei na minha própria casa, contarei os meus dias como a areia.
- 19
A minha raiz se estende até as águas. O orvalho repousa a noite toda sobre o meu ramo.
- 20
A minha glória é renovada em mim. O meu arco se renova na minha mão.'
- 21
“Os homens me ouviam, esperavam, e guardavam silêncio para ouvir o meu conselho.
- 22
Depois das minhas palavras, eles não falavam mais. O meu discurso caía sobre eles.
- 23
Eles esperavam por mim como pela chuva. Suas bocas bebiam como da chuva de primavera.
- 24
Eu sorria para eles quando não tinham confiança. Eles não rejeitavam a luz do meu rosto.
- 25
Eu escolhia o caminho deles, e me assentava como chefe. Eu vivia como um rei no exército, como quem consola os enlutados.
