I am the man who has seen affliction by the rod of his wrath.

He has led me and caused me to walk in darkness, and not in light.
3
Surely he turns his hand against me again and again all day long.
4
He has made my flesh and my skin old. He has broken my bones.
5
He has built against me, and surrounded me with bitterness and hardship.
6
He has made me dwell in dark places, as those who have been long dead.
7
He has walled me about, so that I can’t go out. He has made my chain heavy.
8
Yes, when I cry, and call for help, he shuts out my prayer.
9
He has walled up my ways with cut stone. He has made my paths crooked.
10
He is to me as a bear lying in wait, as a lion in hiding.
11
He has turned away my path, and pulled me in pieces. He has made me desolate.
12
He has bent his bow, and set me as a mark for the arrow.
13
He has caused the shafts of his quiver to enter into my kidneys.
14
I have become a derision to all my people, and their song all day long.
15
He has filled me with bitterness. He has stuffed me with wormwood.
16
He has also broken my teeth with gravel. He has covered me with ashes.
17
You have removed my soul far away from peace. I forgot prosperity.
18
I said, “My strength has perished, along with my expectation from the LORD.”
19
Remember my affliction and my misery, the wormwood and the bitterness.
20
My soul still remembers them, and is bowed down within me.
21
This I recall to my mind; therefore I have hope.
22
It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his mercies don’t fail.
23
They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.
24
“The LORD is my portion,” says my soul. “Therefore I will hope in him.”
25
The LORD is good to those who wait for him, to the soul who seeks him.
26
It is good that a man should hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the LORD.
27
It is good for a man that he bear the yoke in his youth.
28
Let him sit alone and keep silence, because he has laid it on him.
29
Let him put his mouth in the dust, if it is so that there may be hope.
30
Let him give his cheek to him who strikes him. Let him be filled full of reproach.
31
For the Lord will not cast off forever.
32
For though he causes grief, yet he will have compassion according to the multitude of his loving kindnesses.
33
For he does not afflict willingly, nor grieve the children of men.
34
To crush under foot all the prisoners of the earth,
35
to turn away the right of a man before the face of the Most High,
36
to subvert a man in his cause, the Lord doesn’t approve.
37
Who is he who says, and it comes to pass, when the Lord doesn’t command it?
38
Doesn’t evil and good come out of the mouth of the Most High?
39
Why should a living man complain, a man for the punishment of his sins?
40
Let us search and try our ways, and turn again to the LORD.
41
Let’s lift up our heart with our hands to God in the heavens.
42
“We have transgressed and have rebelled. You have not pardoned.
43
“You have covered us with anger and pursued us. You have killed. You have not pitied.
44
You have covered yourself with a cloud, so that no prayer can pass through.
45
You have made us an off-scouring and refuse in the middle of the peoples.
46
“All our enemies have opened their mouth wide against us.
47
Terror and the pit have come on us, devastation and destruction.”
48
My eye runs down with streams of water, for the destruction of the daughter of my people.
49
My eye pours down and doesn’t cease, without any intermission,
50
until the LORD looks down, and sees from heaven.
51
My eye affects my soul, because of all the daughters of my city.
52
They have chased me relentlessly like a bird, those who are my enemies without cause.
53
They have cut off my life in the dungeon, and have cast a stone on me.
54
Waters flowed over my head. I said, “I am cut off.”
55
I called on your name, LORD, out of the lowest dungeon.
56
You heard my voice: “Don’t hide your ear from my sighing, and my cry.”
57
You came near in the day that I called on you. You said, “Don’t be afraid.”
58
Lord, you have pleaded the causes of my soul. You have redeemed my life.
59
LORD, you have seen my wrong. Judge my cause.
60
You have seen all their vengeance and all their plans against me.
61
You have heard their reproach, LORD, and all their plans against me,
62
the lips of those that rose up against me, and their plots against me all day long.
63
You see their sitting down and their rising up. I am their song.
64
You will pay them back, LORD, according to the work of their hands.
65
You will give them hardness of heart, your curse to them.
66
You will pursue them in anger, and destroy them from under the heavens of the LORD.

Eu sou o homem que viu a aflição pela vara da sua ira.
2
Ele me guiou e me fez andar na escuridão, e não na luz.
3
Certamente ele volta a sua mão contra mim repetidas vezes, o dia todo.
4
Ele fez envelhecer a minha carne e a minha pele. Ele quebrou os meus ossos.
5
Ele construiu contra mim, e me cercou de amargura e sofrimento.
6
Ele me fez habitar em lugares escuros, como aqueles que estão mortos há muito tempo.
7
Ele me cercou com um muro, para que eu não possa sair. Ele tornou pesada a minha corrente.
8
Sim, quando eu clamo e peço socorro, ele rejeita a minha oração.
9
Ele bloqueou os meus caminhos com pedras lavradas. Ele tornou tortuosas as minhas veredas.
10
Ele é para mim como um urso à espreita, como um leão escondido.
11
Ele desviou o meu caminho, e me despedaçou. Ele me deixou desolado.
12
Ele armou o seu arco, e me colocou como alvo para a flecha.
13
Ele fez com que as flechas da sua aljava entrassem nos meus rins.
14
Eu me tornei motivo de zombaria para todo o meu povo, e a canção deles o dia todo.
15
Ele me encheu de amargura. Ele me fartou de absinto.
16
Ele também quebrou os meus dentes com cascalho. Ele me cobriu de cinzas.
17
Você afastou a minha alma para longe da paz. Eu me esqueci da prosperidade.
18
Eu disse: “A minha força pereceu, junto com a minha esperança no SENHOR.”
19
Lembre-se da minha aflição e da minha miséria, do absinto e da amargura.
20
A minha alma ainda se lembra deles, e está abatida dentro de mim.
21
Eu trago isso à memória; por isso tenho esperança.
22
É por causa das bondades do SENHOR que não somos consumidos, porque as suas misericórdias não falham.
23
Elas se renovam a cada manhã. Grande é a sua fidelidade.
24
“O SENHOR é a minha porção”, diz a minha alma. “Portanto, esperarei nele.”
25
O SENHOR é bom para aqueles que esperam por ele, para a alma que o busca.
26
É bom que o homem espere e aguarde em silêncio pela salvação do SENHOR.
27
É bom para o homem suportar o jugo na sua juventude.
28
Que ele se assente sozinho e fique em silêncio, porque ele o colocou sobre ele.
29
Que ele ponha a sua boca no pó, caso ainda haja esperança.
30
Que ele dê a sua face àquele que o fere. Que ele se farte de humilhação.
31
Pois o Senhor não rejeitará para sempre.
32
Pois, embora ele cause tristeza, ele terá compaixão segundo a multidão das suas bondades.
33
Pois ele não aflige de bom grado, nem entristece os filhos dos homens.
34
Esmagar debaixo dos pés todos os prisioneiros da terra,
35
negar o direito de um homem perante a face do Altíssimo,
36
subverter um homem em sua causa, o Senhor não aprova.
37
Quem é aquele que fala, e isso acontece, sem que o Senhor o tenha ordenado?
38
Não procedem do Altíssimo tanto o mal quanto o bem?
39
Por que um homem vivo deveria reclamar, um homem por causa da punição dos seus pecados?
40
Esquadrinhemos e provemos os nossos caminhos, e voltemos para o SENHOR.
41
Levantemos o nosso coração com as nossas mãos a Deus nos céus.
42
“Nós transgredimos e nos rebelamos. Você não perdoou.
43
“Você nos cobriu de ira e nos perseguiu. Você matou. Você não teve piedade.
44
Você se cobriu com uma nuvem, para que nenhuma oração pudesse passar.
45
Você nos tornou como escória e refugo no meio dos povos.
46
“Todos os nossos inimigos abriram a boca contra nós.
47
O terror e a cova vieram sobre nós, a devastação e a destruição.”
48
Os meus olhos derramam correntes de água, pela destruição da filha do meu povo.
49
Os meus olhos choram e não cessam, sem nenhum intervalo,
50
até que o SENHOR olhe para baixo, e veja desde o céu.
51
Os meus olhos entristecem a minha alma, por causa de todas as filhas da minha cidade.
52
Eles me caçaram implacavelmente como a um pássaro, aqueles que são meus inimigos sem motivo.
53
Eles cortaram a minha vida na masmorra, e atiraram uma pedra sobre mim.
54
As águas fluíram sobre a minha cabeça. Eu disse: “Estou perdido.”
55
Eu clamei pelo seu nome, SENHOR, da mais profunda masmorra.
56
Você ouviu a minha voz: “Não esconda o seu ouvido do meu suspiro, e do meu clamor.”
57
Você se aproximou no dia em que eu clamei a você. Você disse: “Não tenha medo.”
58
Senhor, você defendeu as causas da minha alma. Você redimiu a minha vida.
59
SENHOR, você viu a injustiça feita a mim. Julgue a minha causa.
60
Você viu toda a vingança deles e todos os seus planos contra mim.
61
Você ouviu as ofensas deles, SENHOR, e todos os seus planos contra mim,
62
os lábios daqueles que se levantaram contra mim, e as suas conspirações contra mim o dia todo.
63
Você vê o assentar e o levantar deles. Eu sou a canção deles.
64
Você lhes dará a retribuição, SENHOR, de acordo com a obra das suas mãos.
65
Você lhes dará dureza de coração, a sua maldição sobre eles.
66
Você os perseguirá com ira, e os destruirá debaixo dos céus do SENHOR.
