Numbers 29

The offering calendar reaches the seventh month, the year's most crowded. First the day of trumpet blasts, then the tenth-day fast when "you shall afflict your souls," then the seven-day feast beginning on the fifteenth, capped by an eighth-day solemn assembly. The bull count itself tells the story: thirteen on day one, then twelve, eleven, ten, nine, eight, seven across the feast, while the two rams and fourteen lambs hold steady each day.

“‘In the seventh month, on the first day of the month, you shall have a holy convocation; you shall do no regular work. It is a day of blowing of trumpets to you.

You shall offer a burnt offering for a pleasant aroma to the LORD: one young bull, one ram, seven male lambs a year old without defect;

and their meal offering, fine flour mixed with oil: three tenths for the bull, two tenths for the ram,

and one tenth for every lamb of the seven lambs;

and one male goat for a sin offering, to make atonement for you;

in addition to the burnt offering of the new moon with its meal offering, and the continual burnt offering with its meal offering, and their drink offerings, according to their ordinance, for a pleasant aroma, an offering made by fire to the LORD.

The descending bulls

Across the seven feast days the bulls drop by one each day, from thirteen (v.13) down to seven (v.32), totaling seventy. The rams and lambs never change; only the bulls decrease.

The pattern is unmistakable once seen, and it ends deliberately: after the seventh day's seven bulls comes the eighth-day assembly with a single bull, one ram, seven lambs — a quiet close after the largest gathering of the year.
