Proverbs 20
It opens bluntly — 'wine is a mocker and beer is a brawler' — and returns repeatedly to honest dealing, with differing weights and measures named twice as an abomination (vv. 10, 23). The sluggard who won't plow in winter, the buyer who runs down a price then boasts, and the rash vow all expose how people talk versus how they act. Kingly justice frames it: a king on the throne scatters evil with his eyes (v. 8), and love and faithfulness keep his throne safe (v. 28).

Wine is a mocker and beer is a brawler. Whoever is led astray by them is not wise.

The terror of a king is like the roaring of a lion. He who provokes him to anger forfeits his own life.

The lamp that searches
Verse 27 is the chapter's deepest line: the spirit of man is the LORD's lamp, searching all his innermost parts. It answers verse 9's question — who can claim a pure heart? — by saying no claim escapes that light.
That inward searching makes sense of the chapter's preoccupation with hidden dishonesty: rigged scales, the false bargain, the secret motive. What looks clean to others is weighed where it cannot hide.
