Psalms 115
Born from the nations' jeer, "Where is their God?" The psalm refuses to take credit for itself ("Not to us, LORD") and turns the taunt back on the mockers' own gods, idols with mouths that cannot speak. It builds toward a threefold call to trust and a cascade of blessings.
- 1
Not to us, LORD, not to us, but to your name give glory, for your loving kindness, and for your truth’s sake.
- 2
Why should the nations say, “Where is their God, now?”
- 3
But our God is in the heavens. He does whatever he pleases.
- 4
Their idols are silver and gold, the work of men’s hands.
- 5
They have mouths, but they don’t speak. They have eyes, but they don’t see.
- 6
They have ears, but they don’t hear. They have noses, but they don’t smell.
- 7
They have hands, but they don’t feel. They have feet, but they don’t walk, neither do they speak through their throat.
- 8
Those who make them will be like them; yes, everyone who trusts in them.
- 9
Israel, trust in the LORD! He is their help and their shield.
- 10
House of Aaron, trust in the LORD! He is their help and their shield.
- 11
You who fear the LORD, trust in the LORD! He is their help and their shield.
- 12
The LORD remembers us. He will bless us. He will bless the house of Israel. He will bless the house of Aaron.
- 13
He will bless those who fear the LORD, both small and great.
- 14
May the LORD increase you more and more, you and your children.
- 15
Blessed are you by the LORD, who made heaven and earth.
- 16
The heavens are the LORD’s heavens, but he has given the earth to the children of men.
- 17
The dead don’t praise the LORD, nor any who go down into silence,
- 18
but we will bless the LORD, from this time forward and forever more. Praise the LORD!
- 1
- 5
Tienen boca, mas no hablarán; tienen ojos, mas no verán;
- 6
Orejas tienen, mas no oirán; tienen narices, mas no olerán;
- 7
Manos tienen, mas no palparán; tienen pies, mas no andarán; no hablarán con su garganta.
- 8
- 17
No alabarán los muertos á JAH, ni cuantos descienden al silencio;
- 18
Aleluya.
You become what you worship
Verses 4-7 catalogue the idol's dead senses, and verse 8 delivers the sting: their makers "will be like them." Against that, three groups are summoned by name to trust the LORD (v.9-11): Israel, the house of Aaron, and all who fear him. The contrast between lifeless statues and the living God who "does whatever he pleases" (v.3) drives the whole poem.
