Psalms 117

The shortest psalm, two verses, and the shortest chapter in the Bible. It calls not Israel but "all you nations" to praise the LORD, grounding the summons in only two things: his steadfast love and his enduring faithfulness.

Psalms 117 (WEB)
  1. 1

Praise the LORD, all you nations! Extol him, all you peoples!

  2. 2

For his loving kindness is great toward us. The LORD’s faithfulness endures forever. Praise the LORD!

Small psalm, wide reach

Its brevity is the design: a single imperative (praise, extol) plus a single reason (v.2). The reach to "all you nations" is unusual for a Hebrew hymn and Paul later quotes this verse in Romans 15:11 as proof the gentiles were always meant to join the chorus. Placed inside the Hallel, it makes the Passover song global.
