Psalms 125

Geography becomes argument here. Those who trust the LORD are like Mount Zion — unmovable, permanent — and just as the hills ring Jerusalem on every side, the LORD encircles his people. The landscape a pilgrim is climbing toward is itself the picture of security.

  1. 1

Those who trust in the LORD are as Mount Zion, which can’t be moved, but remains forever.

  2. 2

As the mountains surround Jerusalem, so the LORD surrounds his people from this time forward and forever more.

  3. 3

For the scepter of wickedness won’t remain over the allotment of the righteous, so that the righteous won’t use their hands to do evil.

  4. 4

Do good, LORD, to those who are good, to those who are upright in their hearts.

  5. 5

But as for those who turn away to their crooked ways, the LORD will lead them away with the workers of iniquity. Peace be on Israel.

Why the wicked scepter can't settle in

Verse 3 gives the reason behind the comfort: the "scepter of wickedness" won't be allowed to rest on the land allotted to the righteous, lest even they be tempted to stretch out their hands toward evil. The psalm then forks — good asked for the upright, judgment for those who veer onto crooked ways — and lands on a four-word benediction, "Peace be on Israel."
