Psalms 145

An acrostic hymn (each verse beginning with a successive Hebrew letter) and the last psalm in the book headed "of David." Its subject is the kingship of God, praised across generations rather than in a single moment of crisis. The poem's center quotes Israel's oldest creed: the LORD is "gracious, merciful, slow to anger" (v.8). From there it widens outward, insisting his goodness reaches "all" his works (v.9) and that he satisfies "every living thing" (v.16).

A kingdom that stoops

The everlasting kingdom of verse 13 is not remote majesty. The very next lines show what this King does: he "upholds all who fall" and raises "those who are bowed down" (v.14), and gives food in due season (v.15).

So greatness and tenderness are not in tension. He is "near to all those who call on him" (v.18), which is why the psalm can summon "all flesh" to bless him (v.21).
