Psalms 25

An acrostic prayer that braids three threads: a plea to be taught God's ways and paths, a request that the sins of the speaker's youth be forgotten, and the fear of enemies who hate "with cruel hatred" (v.19). The mood swings between confidence and distress. Notice how often the words "way," "path," "teach," and "guide" recur. This is a prayer about wanting direction from someone you trust, even while feeling "desolate and afflicted" (v.16).

To you, LORD, I lift up my soul.

My God, I have trusted in you. Don’t let me be shamed. Don’t let my enemies triumph over me.

Yes, no one who waits for you will be shamed. They will be shamed who deal treacherously without cause.

Show me your ways, LORD. Teach me your paths.
5
Guide me in your truth, and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation. I wait for you all day long.

LORD, remember your tender mercies and your loving kindness, for they are from old times.

Don’t remember the sins of my youth, nor my transgressions. Remember me according to your loving kindness, for your goodness’ sake, LORD.

Good and upright is the LORD, therefore he will instruct sinners in the way.

He will guide the humble in justice. He will teach the humble his way.

All the paths of the LORD are loving kindness and truth to such as keep his covenant and his testimonies.

For your name’s sake, LORD, pardon my iniquity, for it is great.

What man is he who fears the LORD? He shall instruct him in the way that he shall choose.

His soul will dwell at ease. His offspring will inherit the land.

The friendship of the LORD is with those who fear him. He will show them his covenant.

Turn to me, and have mercy on me, for I am desolate and afflicted.

The troubles of my heart are enlarged. Oh bring me out of my distresses.

Consider my affliction and my travail. Forgive all my sins.

Consider my enemies, for they are many. They hate me with cruel hatred.

Oh keep my soul, and deliver me. Let me not be disappointed, for I take refuge in you.

Let integrity and uprightness preserve me, for I wait for you.

A ti, SENHOR, elevo a minha alma.

Meu Deus, em ti tenho confiado. Não me deixe ser envergonhado. Não deixe que meus inimigos triunfem sobre mim.

Sim, ninguém que espera no Senhor será envergonhado. Serão envergonhados os que agem traiçoeiramente sem motivo.

Mostre-me os seus caminhos, SENHOR. Ensine-me as suas veredas.

Guie-me na sua verdade e ensine-me, pois o Senhor é o Deus da minha salvação. Eu espero no Senhor o dia todo.

SENHOR, lembre-se das suas ternas misericórdias e do seu amor leal, pois elas existem desde a antiguidade.

Não se lembre dos pecados da minha juventude, nem das minhas transgressões. Lembre-se de mim segundo o seu amor leal, por causa da sua bondade, SENHOR.

Bom e reto é o SENHOR, por isso ele instruirá os pecadores no caminho.

Ele guiará os humildes na justiça. Ele ensinará aos humildes o seu caminho.

Todos os caminhos do SENHOR são amor leal e verdade para aqueles que guardam a sua aliança e os seus testemunhos.

Por amor do seu nome, SENHOR, perdoe a minha iniquidade, pois ela é grande.

Quem é o homem que teme ao SENHOR? Ele o instruirá no caminho que deve escolher.

A sua alma viverá em tranquilidade. A sua descendência herdará a terra.

A amizade do SENHOR é para os que o temem. Ele lhes mostrará a sua aliança.

Os meus olhos estão sempre no SENHOR, pois ele tirará os meus pés da rede.

Volte-se para mim e tenha misericórdia de mim, pois estou solitário e aflito.

As angústias do meu coração se multiplicaram. Ah, tire-me das minhas aflições.

Considere a minha aflição e o meu sofrimento. Perdoe todos os meus pecados.

Considere os meus inimigos, pois eles são muitos. Eles me odeiam com ódio cruel.

Ah, guarde a minha alma e livre-me. Não me deixe ser frustrado, pois no Senhor me refugio.

Que a integridade e a retidão me preservem, pois eu espero no Senhor.

Ó Deus, redima Israel de todas as suas angústias.

Teaching and pardon held together

Two requests keep alternating: "teach me your paths" and "pardon my iniquity, for it is great" (v.11). The psalm refuses to separate them. The same God who instructs sinners (v.8) is asked not to remember youthful sin.

The closing verse breaks the personal frame: after twenty-one verses of "I" and "me," the prayer turns outward, "redeem Israel out of all his troubles" (v.22), widening one person's plea into the nation's.
