Psalms 29
A storm psalm. Seven times the phrase "the LORD's voice" rolls through, tracking thunder as it moves from the waters, down onto Lebanon's cedars, then out to the wilderness of Kadesh. The heavenly beings are summoned to ascribe glory; creation answers by shaking. Notice the geography: the tempest travels north to south across the land, snapping cedars and making mountains skip like a calf. Read it aloud and the repetition becomes the rhythm of the storm itself.
- 1
Ascribe to the LORD, you sons of the mighty, ascribe to the LORD glory and strength.
- 2
Ascribe to the LORD the glory due to his name. Worship the LORD in holy array.
- 3
The LORD’s voice is on the waters. The God of glory thunders, even the LORD on many waters.
- 4
The LORD’s voice is powerful. The LORD’s voice is full of majesty.
- 5
The LORD’s voice breaks the cedars. Yes, the LORD breaks in pieces the cedars of Lebanon.
- 6
He makes them also to skip like a calf; Lebanon and Sirion like a young, wild ox.
- 7
The LORD’s voice strikes with flashes of lightning.
- 8
The LORD’s voice shakes the wilderness. The LORD shakes the wilderness of Kadesh.
- 9
The LORD’s voice makes the deer calve, and strips the forests bare. In his temple everything says, “Glory!”
- 10
The LORD sat enthroned at the Flood. Yes, the LORD sits as King forever.
- 11
The LORD will give strength to his people. The LORD will bless his people with peace.
- 1
Thunder that ends in peace
After all that violence, the psalm settles. The LORD sat enthroned at the Flood and reigns as King forever (v.10), the wildest waters under his throne. Power is not chaos here; it is rule.
And the closing line turns the thunder toward the worshiper: the same LORD who shatters cedars will give strength to his people and bless them with peace (v.11). Overwhelming force becomes a gift handed to the small.
