Psalms 56

Pursued by men who "want to swallow me up" all day long, the speaker answers fear with a decision: "When I am afraid, I will put my trust in you." The enemies twist his words, conspire, and watch his steps, eager to take his life. A refrain anchors the poem (verses 4 and 10-11): praising God's word and asking what mere flesh or man can do to him. Verse 8 holds a tender picture: God counting the psalmist's wanderings and storing his tears.

Tears in a bottle, steps in a book

Verse 8 imagines God keeping a meticulous record of suffering: wanderings counted, tears poured into a container, all written in his book. It is the opposite of the enemies who only count his missteps to trap him. That assurance lets the closing verses move from rescue "from death" to the goal of walking before God "in the light of the living."
