Psalms 98
A short coronation hymn that calls for a "new song" because God's "right hand" has won salvation, and the nations themselves have watched it happen (vv. 1-3). The praise then spreads outward: harps, trumpets, the ram's horn, and finally the sea, rivers, and mountains all join in (vv. 4-8). Watch how the singers widen with each line. First Israel remembers God's faithfulness, then "all the ends of the earth" see it, and at the close the whole created world makes noise before a coming judge (v. 9).

Sing to the LORD a new song, for he has done marvelous things! His right hand and his holy arm have worked salvation for him.

The LORD has made known his salvation. He has openly shown his righteousness in the sight of the nations.

He has remembered his loving kindness and his faithfulness toward the house of Israel. All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God.

Make a joyful noise to the LORD, all the earth! Burst out and sing for joy, yes, sing praises!

Sing praises to the LORD with the harp, with the harp and the voice of melody.

With trumpets and sound of the ram’s horn, make a joyful noise before the King, the LORD.

Let the sea roar with its fullness; the world, and those who dwell therein.

Let the rivers clap their hands. Let the mountains sing for joy together.
- 9
Let them sing before the LORD, for he comes to judge the earth. He will judge the world with righteousness, and the peoples with equity.
Judgment as good news
The psalm ends not with fear but with rivers clapping their hands at the news that the LORD "comes to judge the earth." Here judgment means setting things right with "righteousness" and "equity" (v. 9), which is why creation celebrates rather than dreads it.
This pairs the psalm with 96-99, the cluster of enthronement songs, where God's rule over the nations is the recurring theme.
