Proverbios 9
La sección inicial de Proverbios termina con dos anfitrionas rivales. La sabiduría edificó su casa sobre siete columnas, preparó su carne, mezcló su vino y envió a sus criadas a invitar a los simples (v.1-6). Al final del capítulo, la insensatez lanza el mismo llamado desde su puerta (v.13-18). Observa cómo ambas invitaciones suenan casi igual: "Cualquiera simple, venga acá" (v.4 y v.16).

Mató sus víctimas, templó su vino, y puso su mesa.

Venid, comed mi pan, y bebed del vino que yo he templado.

Dejad las simplezas, y vivid; y andad por el camino de la inteligencia.

El que corrige al escarnecedor, afrenta se acarrea: el que reprende al impío, se atrae mancha.

No reprendas al escarnecedor, porque no te aborrezca; corrige al sabio, y te amará.

Da al sabio, y será más sabio: enseña al justo, y acrecerá su saber.

El temor de Jehová es el principio de la sabiduría; y la ciencia de los santos es inteligencia.

Porque por mí se aumentarán tus días, y años de vida se te añadirán.

Si fueres sabio, para ti lo serás: mas si fueres escarnecedor, pagarás tú solo.

La mujer loca es alborotadora; es simple é ignorante.

Siéntase en una silla á la puerta de su casa, en lo alto de la ciudad,

Para llamar á los que pasan por el camino, que van por sus caminos derechos.

Las aguas hurtadas son dulces, y el pan comido en oculto es suave.

Y no saben que allí están los muertos; que sus convidados están en los profundos de la sepultura.

Wisdom has built her house. She has carved out her seven pillars.

She has prepared her meat. She has mixed her wine. She has also set her table.

She has sent out her maidens. She cries from the highest places of the city:

“Whoever is simple, let him turn in here!” As for him who is void of understanding, she says to him,

“Come, eat some of my bread, Drink some of the wine which I have mixed!

Leave your simple ways, and live. Walk in the way of understanding.”

One who corrects a mocker invites insult. One who reproves a wicked man invites abuse.

Don’t reprove a scoffer, lest he hate you. Reprove a wise person, and he will love you.

Instruct a wise person, and he will be still wiser. Teach a righteous person, and he will increase in learning.

The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom. The knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.

For by me your days will be multiplied. The years of your life will be increased.

If you are wise, you are wise for yourself. If you mock, you alone will bear it.

The foolish woman is loud, undisciplined, and knows nothing.
- 14
She sits at the door of her house, on a seat in the high places of the city,
- 15
to call to those who pass by, who go straight on their ways,
- 16
“Whoever is simple, let him turn in here.” As for him who is void of understanding, she says to him,

“Stolen water is sweet. Food eaten in secret is pleasant.”

But he doesn’t know that the departed spirits are there, that her guests are in the depths of Sheol.
Mismas palabras, finales opuestos
Las dos llaman a los simples a desviarse, pero el menú cambia. La sabiduría ofrece pan y vino mezclado con el mandato de dejar las simplezas y vivir (v.6); la insensatez ofrece "aguas hurtadas" y pan comido en oculto, dulces justo por ser ilícitos (v.17). El costo oculto aparece en el v.18: sus convidados ya están en lo profundo del Seol.
Entre los dos banquetes está el eje del libro: "El temor de Jehová es el principio de la sabiduría" (v.10), con notas sobre por qué no se puede corregir al escarnecedor, mientras el sabio se hace más sabio al ser reprendido (v.7-9).
