João 1

Duas partes dividem a abertura. Primeiro um hino: o Verbo que estava com Deus e era Deus, a luz que as trevas não venceram, que se fez carne e habitou entre nós. Depois a cena desce à terra: João Batista responde aos sacerdotes e aponta o Cordeiro de Deus. Observe a corrente de chamados: André acha Simão, Jesus o chama de Cefas, e Filipe encontra Natanael debaixo da figueira. Note quantas vezes ecoa "Vem e vê".

No princípio era o Verbo, e o Verbo estava com Deus, e o Verbo era Deus.

Ele estava no princípio com Deus.

Todas as coisas foram feitas por meio dele. Sem ele, nada do que existe veio a existir sem ele.

Nele estava a vida, e a vida era a luz dos homens.

A luz brilha nas trevas, e as trevas não a venceram .

Houve um homem enviado por Deus, cujo nome era João.

Este veio como testemunha, para que testificasse a respeito da luz, a fim de que todos cressem por meio dele.

Ele não era a luz, mas foi enviado para que testificasse a respeito da luz.

A verdadeira luz, que ilumina a todos, estava vindo ao mundo.
10
Ele estava no mundo, e o mundo foi feito por meio dele, e o mundo não o reconheceu.

Ele veio para o que era seu, e os seus não o receberam.

Mas, a todos quantos o receberam, deu-lhes o poder de se tornarem filhos de Deus, ou seja, aos que creem no seu nome:

os quais não nasceram do sangue, nem da vontade da carne, nem da vontade do homem, mas de Deus.

O Verbo se fez carne e armou sua tenda entre nós. Vimos a sua glória, glória como do Filho unigênito do Pai, cheio de graça e de verdade.

João testificou a respeito dele. Ele clamou, dizendo: “Este era aquele de quem eu disse: ‘Aquele que vem depois de mim me superou, pois já existia antes de mim.’”

Da sua plenitude todos nós recebemos graça sobre graça.

Pois a lei foi dada por meio de Moisés. A graça e a verdade vieram por meio de Jesus Cristo.

Ninguém jamais viu a Deus. O Filho unigênito , que está no seio do Pai, o revelou.

Este é o testemunho de João, quando os judeus enviaram sacerdotes e levitas de Jerusalém para lhe perguntar: “Quem é você?”

Ele declarou, e não negou, mas declarou: “Eu não sou o Cristo.”
21
Eles lhe perguntaram: “Então, quem? Você é Elias?” Ele disse: “Não sou.” “Você é o profeta?” Ele respondeu: “Não.”
22
Disseram-lhe, portanto: “Quem é você? Dê-nos uma resposta para levarmos àqueles que nos enviaram. O que você diz a respeito de si mesmo?”

Ele disse: “Eu sou a voz do que clama no deserto: ‘Endireitem o caminho do Senhor’, como disse o profeta Isaías.”

Os que tinham sido enviados eram dos fariseus.
25
Eles lhe perguntaram: “Por que então você batiza, se não é o Cristo, nem Elias, nem o profeta?”

João lhes respondeu: “Eu batizo em água, mas no meio de vocês está alguém que vocês não conhecem.
27
Ele é aquele que vem depois de mim, que tem primazia sobre mim, de quem não sou digno de desamarrar a correia da sandália.”
28
Essas coisas aconteceram em Betânia, do outro lado do Jordão, onde João estava batizando.
29
No dia seguinte, ele viu Jesus vindo em sua direção e disse: “Eis o Cordeiro de Deus, que tira o pecado do mundo!
30
Este é aquele de quem eu disse: ‘Depois de mim vem um homem que tem a preferência sobre mim, pois já existia antes de mim.’
31
Eu não o conhecia, mas por esta razão vim batizando em água: para que ele fosse revelado a Israel.”
32
João testificou, dizendo: “Eu vi o Espírito descer do céu como uma pomba, e permaneceu sobre ele.
33
Eu não o reconheci, mas aquele que me enviou a batizar em água me disse: ‘Aquele sobre quem você vir o Espírito descer e permanecer, esse é o que batiza no Espírito Santo.’
34
Eu vi e testifiquei que este é o Filho de Deus.”

Novamente, no dia seguinte, João estava lá com dois dos seus discípulos,
36
e, olhando para Jesus, que andava por ali, disse: “Eis o Cordeiro de Deus!”

Os dois discípulos o ouviram falar e seguiram a Jesus.
38
Jesus voltou-se e, vendo que o seguiam, disse-lhes: “O que vocês estão procurando?” Eles lhe disseram: “Rabi” (que, traduzido, quer dizer Mestre), “onde o senhor está hospedado?”

Ele lhes disse: “Venham e vejam.” Eles foram e viram onde ele estava hospedado, e passaram aquele dia com ele. Era por volta da décima hora.

Um dos dois que ouviram João e seguiram a Jesus era André, irmão de Simão Pedro.
41
Ele primeiro encontrou seu próprio irmão, Simão, e lhe disse: “Achamos o Messias!” (que, traduzido, é Cristo ).
42
Ele o levou a Jesus. Jesus olhou para ele e disse: “Você é Simão, filho de Jonas. Você será chamado Cefas” (que, traduzido, é Pedro).
43
No dia seguinte, ele decidiu partir para a Galileia, e encontrou Filipe. Jesus lhe disse: “Siga-me.”

Ora, Filipe era de Betsaida, a cidade de André e Pedro.
45
Filipe encontrou Natanael e lhe disse: “Achamos aquele sobre quem Moisés escreveu na lei, e também os profetas: Jesus de Nazaré, filho de José.”

Natanael lhe perguntou: “Pode vir alguma coisa boa de Nazaré?” Filipe lhe disse: “Venha e veja.”

Jesus viu Natanael vindo em sua direção e disse a respeito dele: “Eis um verdadeiro israelita, em quem não há engano!”

Natanael lhe perguntou: “Como o senhor me conhece?” Jesus lhe respondeu: “Antes que Filipe o chamasse, quando você estava debaixo da figueira, eu o vi.”

Natanael lhe respondeu: “Rabi, você é o Filho de Deus! Você é o Rei de Israel!”

Jesus lhe respondeu: “Você crê porque eu disse: ‘Eu o vi debaixo da figueira’? Você verá coisas maiores do que estas!”

E lhe disse: “Eu lhes digo com toda a verdade: de agora em diante vocês verão o céu aberto, e os anjos de Deus subindo e descendo sobre o Filho do Homem.”

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

The same was in the beginning with God.

All things were made through him. Without him, nothing was made that has been made.

In him was life, and the life was the light of men.

The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness hasn’t overcome it.

There came a man sent from God, whose name was John.
7
The same came as a witness, that he might testify about the light, that all might believe through him.
8
He was not the light, but was sent that he might testify about the light.

The true light that enlightens everyone was coming into the world.
10
He was in the world, and the world was made through him, and the world didn’t recognize him.
11
He came to his own, and those who were his own didn’t receive him.
12
But as many as received him, to them he gave the right to become God’s children, to those who believe in his name:

who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
14
The Word became flesh and lived among us. We saw his glory, such glory as of the only born Son of the Father, full of grace and truth.
15
John testified about him. He cried out, saying, “This was he of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me has surpassed me, for he was before me.’”

From his fullness we all received grace upon grace.
17
For the law was given through Moses. Grace and truth were realized through Jesus Christ.
18
No one has seen God at any time. The only born Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, has declared him.
19
This is John’s testimony, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?”
20
He declared, and didn’t deny, but he declared, “I am not the Christ.”
21
They asked him, “What then? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you the prophet?” He answered, “No.”
22
They said therefore to him, “Who are you? Give us an answer to take back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?”
23
He said, “I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord,’ as Isaiah the prophet said.”
24
The ones who had been sent were from the Pharisees.
25
They asked him, “Why then do you baptize if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the prophet?”
26
John answered them, “I baptize in water, but among you stands one whom you don’t know.
27
He is the one who comes after me, who is preferred before me, whose sandal strap I’m not worthy to loosen.”
28
These things were done in Bethany beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing.
29
The next day, he saw Jesus coming to him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!
30
This is he of whom I said, ‘After me comes a man who is preferred before me, for he was before me.’
31
I didn’t know him, but for this reason I came baptizing in water, that he would be revealed to Israel.”
32
John testified, saying, “I have seen the Spirit descending like a dove out of heaven, and it remained on him.
33
I didn’t recognize him, but he who sent me to baptize in water said to me, ‘On whomever you will see the Spirit descending and remaining on him is he who baptizes in the Holy Spirit.’
34
I have seen and have testified that this is the Son of God.”

Again, the next day, John was standing with two of his disciples,
36
and he looked at Jesus as he walked, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God!”

The two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus.
38
Jesus turned and saw them following, and said to them, “What are you looking for?” They said to him, “Rabbi” (which is to say, being interpreted, Teacher), “where are you staying?”
39
He said to them, “Come and see.” They came and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day. It was about the tenth hour.
40
One of the two who heard John and followed him was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother.
41
He first found his own brother, Simon, and said to him, “We have found the Messiah!” (which is, being interpreted, Christ ).
42
He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon the son of Jonah. You shall be called Cephas” (which is by interpretation, Peter).
43
On the next day, he was determined to go out into Galilee, and he found Philip. Jesus said to him, “Follow me.”
44
Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter.
45
Philip found Nathanael, and said to him, “We have found him of whom Moses in the law and also the prophets, wrote: Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.”

Nathanael said to him, “Can any good thing come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.”

Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, and said about him, “Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom is no deceit!”
48
Nathanael said to him, “How do you know me?” Jesus answered him, “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.”
49
Nathanael answered him, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are King of Israel!”
50
Jesus answered him, “Because I told you, ‘I saw you underneath the fig tree,’ do you believe? You will see greater things than these!”
51
He said to him, “Most certainly, I tell you all, hereafter you will see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”

Do Verbo eterno ao chamado cara a cara

O texto vai da criação a uma tarde comum: por volta do versículo 39 dois homens só perguntam onde o rabi está morando e ficam com ele, por volta da hora décima. Esse salto da eternidade ao cotidiano define o método do evangelho inteiro.

Os títulos se acumulam depressa: Cordeiro de Deus, Rabi, Messias, Filho de Deus, Rei de Israel, Filho do homem. Cada um sai de uma boca diferente, montando o retrato que o prólogo já tinha anunciado.
