As palavras do pregador, o filho de Davi, rei em Jerusalém:

“Vaidade das vaidades”, diz o pregador; “Vaidade das vaidades, tudo é vaidade”.

O que o homem ganha com todo seu trabalho no qual ele trabalha sob o sol?
- 4
Uma geração vai, e outra geração vem; mas a terra permanece para sempre.
- 5
O sol também se levanta, e o sol se põe, e se apressa para seu lugar onde nasce.

O vento vai em direção ao sul, e se volta para o norte. Ele se vira continuamente enquanto vai, e o vento retorna novamente a seus cursos.

Todos os rios correm para o mar, mas o mar não está cheio. Para o lugar onde os rios correm, lá eles correm novamente.

Todas as coisas estão cheias de cansaço para além da pronúncia. O olho não se contenta em ver, nem o ouvido se enche de audição.

O que foi é o que deve ser, e o que foi feito é o que deve ser feito; e não há nada de novo sob o sol.

Há alguma coisa da qual se possa dizer: “Eis que isto é novo?”. Já foi há muito tempo, nos tempos que nos antecederam.

Não há memória do primeiro; nem haverá memória do segundo que virá, entre os que virão depois.

Eu, o Pregador, fui rei sobre Israel em Jerusalém.

Eu apliquei meu coração para buscar e buscar com sabedoria tudo o que é feito sob o céu. É um fardo pesado que Deus deu aos filhos dos homens para serem afligidos.

Vi todas as obras que são feitas sob o sol; e eis que tudo é vaidade e uma perseguição ao vento.

O que é torto não pode ser reto; e o que está faltando não pode ser contado.

Eu disse para mim mesmo: “Eis que obtive para mim uma grande sabedoria acima de tudo o que havia antes de mim em Jerusalém”. Sim, meu coração teve uma grande experiência de sabedoria e conhecimento”.

Eu apliquei meu coração para conhecer a sabedoria, e para conhecer a loucura e a loucura. Percebi que isto também era uma perseguição ao vento.

Pois em muita sabedoria há muita dor; e quem aumenta o conhecimento aumenta a dor.

What does man gain from all his labor in which he labors under the sun?

One generation goes, and another generation comes; but the earth remains forever.

The sun also rises, and the sun goes down, and hurries to its place where it rises.

The wind goes toward the south, and turns around to the north. It turns around continually as it goes, and the wind returns again to its courses.

All the rivers run into the sea, yet the sea is not full. To the place where the rivers flow, there they flow again.

All things are full of weariness beyond uttering. The eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing.

That which has been is that which shall be, and that which has been done is that which shall be done; and there is no new thing under the sun.
- 10
Is there a thing of which it may be said, “Behold, this is new”? It has been long ago, in the ages which were before us.

There is no memory of the former; neither shall there be any memory of the latter that are to come, among those that shall come after.

I, the Preacher, was king over Israel in Jerusalem.
- 13
I applied my heart to seek and to search out by wisdom concerning all that is done under the sky. It is a heavy burden that God has given to the sons of men to be afflicted with.

I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and behold, all is vanity and a chasing after wind.
- 15
That which is crooked can’t be made straight; and that which is lacking can’t be counted.
- 16
I said to myself, “Behold, I have obtained for myself great wisdom above all who were before me in Jerusalem. Yes, my heart has had great experience of wisdom and knowledge.”

I applied my heart to know wisdom, and to know madness and folly. I perceived that this also was a chasing after wind.
- 18
For in much wisdom is much grief; and he who increases knowledge increases sorrow.
