Mateus 23
Jesus abandona o duelo verbal com os chefes e passa a uma acusação pública e prolongada contra os escribas e fariseus. Manda o povo obedecer ao que eles ensinam, mas não imitar o que fazem, e pronuncia depois uma série de "ais" que expõem o fosso entre a aparência e o interior. Termina com um lamento sobre Jerusalém.

Então Jesus falou às multidões e aos seus discípulos,

dizendo: “Os escribas e os fariseus estão assentados na cadeira de Moisés.
- 3
Portanto, tudo o que eles lhes disserem para observar, observem e façam, mas não façam as obras deles; pois eles dizem, e não fazem.
- 4
Pois eles atam fardos pesados e difíceis de carregar, e os colocam sobre os ombros dos homens; mas eles mesmos não querem levantar um dedo para ajudá-los.

Mas eles fazem todas as suas obras para serem vistos pelos homens. Eles alargam os seus filactérios e alongam as franjas de suas vestes,

e amam o lugar de honra nos banquetes, os melhores assentos nas sinagogas,
- 7
as saudações nas praças, e de serem chamados de 'Rabi, Rabi' pelos homens.

Mas vocês não devem ser chamados de 'Rabi', pois um só é o Mestre de vocês, o Cristo, e todos vocês são irmãos.

A ninguém na terra chamem de pai, pois um só é o Pai de vocês, aquele que está nos céus.
- 10
Nem sejam chamados de guias, pois um só é o Guia de vocês, o Cristo.

Mas o maior entre vocês será o seu servo.
- 12
Quem se exaltar será humilhado, e quem se humilhar será exaltado.

“Ai de vocês, escribas e fariseus, hipócritas! Pois vocês devoram as casas das viúvas e, por pretexto, fazem longas orações. Por isso, vocês receberão maior condenação.
- 14
“Mas ai de vocês, escribas e fariseus, hipócritas! Porque vocês fecham o Reino dos Céus aos homens; pois vocês mesmos não entram, nem permitem que entrem aqueles que estão entrando.
- 15
Ai de vocês, escribas e fariseus, hipócritas! Pois vocês viajam pelo mar e pela terra para fazer um prosélito; e quando ele se torna um, vocês o fazem duas vezes mais filho da Geena do que vocês mesmos.

“Ai de vocês, guias cegos, que dizem: 'Quem jurar pelo templo, isso não é nada; mas quem jurar pelo ouro do templo, fica obrigado.'

Tolos e cegos! Pois qual é maior: o ouro ou o templo que santifica o ouro?
- 18
E: 'Quem jurar pelo altar, isso não é nada; mas quem jurar pela oferta que está sobre ele, fica obrigado.'

Tolos e cegos! Pois qual é maior: a oferta, ou o altar que santifica a oferta?
- 20
Portanto, aquele que jura pelo altar, jura por ele e por tudo o que está sobre ele.

Aquele que jura pelo templo, jura por ele e por aquele que tem habitado nele.
- 22
E aquele que jura pelo céu, jura pelo trono de Deus e por aquele que está assentado nele.

“Ai de vocês, escribas e fariseus, hipócritas! Pois vocês dão o dízimo da hortelã, do endro e do cominho, e têm negligenciado os preceitos mais importantes da lei: a justiça, a misericórdia e a fé. Mas vocês deviam ter feito estas coisas, e não ter deixado as outras por fazer.

Guias cegos, que coam um mosquito e engolem um camelo!

“Ai de vocês, escribas e fariseus, hipócritas! Pois vocês limpam o exterior do copo e do prato, mas por dentro eles estão cheios de extorsão e injustiça.
- 26
Fariseu cego, limpe primeiro o interior do copo e do prato, para que o seu exterior também fique limpo.

“Ai de vocês, escribas e fariseus, hipócritas! Pois vocês são semelhantes a sepulcros caiados, que por fora parecem bonitos, mas por dentro estão cheios de ossos de mortos e de toda imundície.
- 28
Assim também vocês, por fora, parecem justos aos homens, mas por dentro estão cheios de hipocrisia e iniquidade.

“Ai de vocês, escribas e fariseus, hipócritas! Pois vocês edificam os sepulcros dos profetas e enfeitam os túmulos dos justos,
- 30
e dizem: 'Se tivéssemos vivido nos dias de nossos pais, não teríamos sido cúmplices deles no sangue dos profetas.'

Portanto, vocês testemunham contra si mesmos que são filhos daqueles que mataram os profetas.

Encham, pois, a medida de seus pais.

Serpentes, raça de víboras, como vocês escaparão da condenação da Geena?
- 34
Portanto, eis que eu lhes envio profetas, sábios e escribas. A alguns deles vocês matarão e crucificarão; e a outros vocês açoitarão em suas sinagogas e perseguirão de cidade em cidade,

para que venha sobre vocês todo o sangue justo derramado sobre a terra, desde o sangue do justo Abel até o sangue de Zacarias, filho de Baraquias, a quem vocês mataram entre o santuário e o altar.

Em verdade lhes digo: todas estas coisas virão sobre esta geração.

“Jerusalém, Jerusalém, que mata os profetas e apedreja os que lhe são enviados! Quantas vezes eu quis ajuntar os seus filhos, assim como a galinha ajunta os seus pintinhos debaixo das asas, mas vocês não quiseram!

Eis que a casa de vocês lhes ficará deserta.
- 39
Pois eu lhes digo: vocês não me verão mais, desde agora, até que digam: 'Bendito o que vem em nome do Senhor!'”

Then Jesus spoke to the multitudes and to his disciples,

saying, “The scribes and the Pharisees sit on Moses’ seat.
- 3
All things therefore whatever they tell you to observe, observe and do, but don’t do their works; for they say, and don’t do.

For they bind heavy burdens that are grievous to be borne, and lay them on men’s shoulders; but they themselves will not lift a finger to help them.
- 5
But they do all their works to be seen by men. They make their phylacteries broad and enlarge the fringes of their garments,
- 6
and love the place of honor at feasts, the best seats in the synagogues,
- 7
the salutations in the marketplaces, and to be called ‘Rabbi, Rabbi’ by men.
- 8
But you are not to be called ‘Rabbi’, for one is your teacher, the Christ, and all of you are brothers.
- 9
Call no man on the earth your father, for one is your Father, he who is in heaven.
- 10
Neither be called masters, for one is your master, the Christ.
- 11
But he who is greatest among you will be your servant.
- 12
Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.
- 13
“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you devour widows’ houses, and as a pretense you make long prayers. Therefore you will receive greater condemnation.
- 14
“But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! Because you shut up the Kingdom of Heaven against men; for you don’t enter in yourselves, neither do you allow those who are entering in to enter.
- 15
Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you travel around by sea and land to make one proselyte; and when he becomes one, you make him twice as much a son of Gehenna as yourselves.

“Woe to you, you blind guides, who say, ‘Whoever swears by the temple, it is nothing; but whoever swears by the gold of the temple, he is obligated.’
- 17
You blind fools! For which is greater, the gold or the temple that sanctifies the gold?
- 18
And, ‘Whoever swears by the altar, it is nothing; but whoever swears by the gift that is on it, he is obligated.’
- 19
You blind fools! For which is greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifies the gift?
- 20
He therefore who swears by the altar, swears by it and by everything on it.
- 21
He who swears by the temple, swears by it and by him who has been living in it.
- 22
He who swears by heaven, swears by the throne of God and by him who sits on it.

“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint, dill, and cumin, and have left undone the weightier matters of the law: justice, mercy, and faith. But you ought to have done these, and not to have left the other undone.

You blind guides, who strain out a gnat, and swallow a camel!
- 25
“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and unrighteousness.

You blind Pharisee, first clean the inside of the cup and of the platter, that its outside may become clean also.
- 27
“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitened tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but inwardly are full of dead men’s bones and of all uncleanness.
- 28
Even so you also outwardly appear righteous to men, but inwardly you are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.
- 29
“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you build the tombs of the prophets and decorate the tombs of the righteous,
- 30
and say, ‘If we had lived in the days of our fathers, we wouldn’t have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.’
- 31
Therefore you testify to yourselves that you are children of those who killed the prophets.
- 32
Fill up, then, the measure of your fathers.
- 33
You serpents, you offspring of vipers, how will you escape the judgment of Gehenna?
- 34
Therefore, behold, I send to you prophets, wise men, and scribes. Some of them you will kill and crucify; and some of them you will scourge in your synagogues and persecute from city to city,
- 35
that on you may come all the righteous blood shed on the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zachariah son of Barachiah, whom you killed between the sanctuary and the altar.

Most certainly I tell you, all these things will come upon this generation.
- 37
“Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I would have gathered your children together, even as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you would not!

Behold, your house is left to you desolate.
- 39
For I tell you, you will not see me from now on, until you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!’”
Os ais e a dor final
O repetido "Ai de vós, escribas e fariseus, hipócritas!" aponta faltas concretas: fechar o Reino aos demais, dizimar ervas enquanto descuram a justiça e a misericórdia, limpar o exterior do copo, parecer sepulcros caiados. A imagem que não se esquece é coar-se um mosquito e engolir-se um camelo (v.24). O tom feroz quebra-se no fim em tristeza: "Jerusalém, Jerusalém", a desejar ajuntar os seus filhos como a galinha ajunta os pintainhos (v.37).
