The tribal quarrel of chapter 19 detonates: Sheba son of Bichri, a Benjamite, blows the trumpet and pulls Israel away from David with the cry that they have no portion in the son of Jesse. David reaches Jerusalem, shuts up the ten violated concubines in lifelong widowhood, and orders pursuit. Watch Joab eliminate his rival Amasa with a kiss and a hidden sword, then chase Sheba north to a walled town — where the crisis is settled not by a soldier but by an unnamed wise woman.

There happened to be there a wicked fellow, whose name was Sheba the son of Bichri, a Benjamite; and he blew the trumpet, and said, “We have no portion in David, neither have we inheritance in the son of Jesse. Every man to his tents, Israel!”

So all the men of Israel went up from following David, and followed Sheba the son of Bichri; but the men of Judah joined with their king, from the Jordan even to Jerusalem.

David came to his house at Jerusalem; and the king took the ten women his concubines, whom he had left to keep the house, and put them in custody and provided them with sustenance, but didn’t go in to them. So they were shut up to the day of their death, living in widowhood.

Then the king said to Amasa, “Call me the men of Judah together within three days, and be here present.”

So Amasa went to call the men of Judah together, but he stayed longer than the set time which had been appointed to him.

David said to Abishai, “Now Sheba the son of Bichri will do us more harm than Absalom did. Take your lord’s servants and pursue after him, lest he get himself fortified cities, and escape out of our sight.”

Joab’s men went out after him with the Cherethites, the Pelethites, and all the mighty men; and they went out of Jerusalem to pursue Sheba the son of Bichri.

When they were at the great stone which is in Gibeon, Amasa came to meet them. Joab was clothed in his apparel of war that he had put on, and on it was a sash with a sword fastened on his waist in its sheath; and as he went along it fell out.

Joab said to Amasa, “Is it well with you, my brother?” Joab took Amasa by the beard with his right hand to kiss him.
10
But Amasa took no heed to the sword that was in Joab’s hand. So he struck him with it in the body and shed out his bowels to the ground, and didn’t strike him again; and he died. Joab and Abishai his brother pursued Sheba the son of Bichri.

One of Joab’s young men stood by him, and said, “He who favors Joab, and he who is for David, let him follow Joab!”

Amasa lay wallowing in his blood in the middle of the highway. When the man saw that all the people stood still, he carried Amasa out of the highway into the field, and cast a garment over him when he saw that everyone who came by him stood still.

When he was removed out of the highway, all the people went on after Joab to pursue Sheba the son of Bichri.

He went through all the tribes of Israel to Abel, to Beth Maacah, and all the Berites. They were gathered together, and went also after him.
15
They came and besieged him in Abel of Beth Maacah, and they cast up a mound against the city, and it stood against the rampart; and all the people who were with Joab battered the wall to throw it down.
16
Then a wise woman cried out of the city, “Hear, hear! Please say to Joab, ‘Come near here, that I may speak with you.’”
17
He came near to her; and the woman said, “Are you Joab?” He answered, “I am.” Then she said to him, “Hear the words of your servant.” He answered, “I’m listening.”

Then she spoke, saying, “They used to say in old times, ‘They shall surely ask counsel at Abel,’ and so they settled a matter.
19
I am among those who are peaceable and faithful in Israel. You seek to destroy a city and a mother in Israel. Why will you swallow up the LORD’s inheritance?”
20
Joab answered, “Far be it, far be it from me, that I should swallow up or destroy.
21
The matter is not so. But a man of the hill country of Ephraim, Sheba the son of Bichri by name, has lifted up his hand against the king, even against David. Just deliver him, and I will depart from the city.” The woman said to Joab, “Behold, his head will be thrown to you over the wall.”
22
Then the woman went to all the people in her wisdom. They cut off the head of Sheba the son of Bichri, and threw it out to Joab. He blew the trumpet, and they were dispersed from the city, every man to his tent. Then Joab returned to Jerusalem to the king.

Now Joab was over all the army of Israel, Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was over the Cherethites and over the Pelethites,

Adoram was over the men subject to forced labor, Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud was the recorder,
25
Sheva was scribe, Zadok and Abiathar were priests,
26
and Ira the Jairite was chief minister to David.

Aconteceu estar ali um homem perverso, cujo nome era Seba, filho de Bicri, um benjamita; e ele tocou a trombeta e disse: “Não temos parte em Davi, nem temos herança no filho de Jessé. Cada um para a sua tenda, ó Israel!”

Assim, todos os homens de Israel deixaram de seguir Davi e seguiram a Seba, filho de Bicri; mas os homens de Judá permaneceram unidos ao seu rei, desde o Jordão até Jerusalém.

Davi chegou à sua casa em Jerusalém; e o rei pegou as dez mulheres, suas concubinas, que ele havia deixado para cuidarem da casa, e as colocou sob guarda e as proveu de sustento, mas não se deitou com elas. Assim elas ficaram trancadas até o dia da morte delas, vivendo como viúvas.

Então o rei disse a Amasa: “Convoque os homens de Judá para se reunirem em três dias, e você esteja presente aqui.”

Assim Amasa foi convocar os homens de Judá, mas ele demorou mais do que o tempo fixado que lhe havia sido designado.

Davi disse a Abisai: “Agora Seba, filho de Bicri, nos fará mais mal do que Absalão fez. Pegue os servos do seu senhor e persiga-o, para que ele não consiga cidades fortificadas para si e escape da nossa vista.”

Os homens de Joabe saíram atrás dele, com os quereteus, os peleteus e todos os homens valentes; e eles saíram de Jerusalém para perseguir Seba, filho de Bicri.

Quando estavam junto à grande pedra que fica em Gibeom, Amasa veio ao encontro deles. Joabe estava vestido com a sua roupa de guerra que havia colocado, e sobre ela havia um cinto com uma espada presa na cintura, em sua bainha; e enquanto ele caminhava, a espada caiu.

Joabe perguntou a Amasa: “Tudo bem com você, meu irmão?” E Joabe segurou Amasa pela barba com a mão direita, para beijá-lo.

Mas Amasa não prestou atenção à espada que estava na mão de Joabe. Então Joabe o feriu com ela no estômago e derramou as suas entranhas por terra, e não o feriu novamente; e ele morreu. Joabe e Abisai, seu irmão, perseguiram Seba, filho de Bicri.

Um dos jovens de Joabe ficou perto do corpo e disse: “Quem é a favor de Joabe, e quem é por Davi, que siga Joabe!”

Amasa estava revolvido em seu próprio sangue no meio da estrada. Quando o homem viu que todo o povo parava, ele arrastou Amasa da estrada para o campo, e jogou um manto sobre ele, ao ver que todos os que chegavam perto dele paravam.

Quando ele foi removido da estrada, todo o povo seguiu atrás de Joabe para perseguir Seba, filho de Bicri.

Ele passou por todas as tribos de Israel até Abel, a Bete-Maaca, e todos os beritas. Eles se reuniram e também foram atrás dele.

Eles chegaram e o sitiaram em Abel de Bete-Maaca, e construíram uma rampa de cerco contra a cidade, e ela se ergueu contra a muralha exterior; e todo o povo que estava com Joabe batia na muralha para derrubá-la.

Então uma mulher sábia gritou de dentro da cidade: “Ouçam, ouçam! Por favor, digam a Joabe: 'Aproxime-se daqui, para que eu possa falar com você.'”

Ele se aproximou dela; e a mulher perguntou: “Você é Joabe?” Ele respondeu: “Sou eu.” Então ela lhe disse: “Ouça as palavras da sua serva.” Ele respondeu: “Estou ouvindo.”

Então ela falou, dizendo: “Antigamente costumavam dizer: 'Certamente pedirão conselho em Abel', e assim resolviam uma questão.

Eu sou uma das pacíficas e fiéis em Israel. Você procura destruir uma cidade e uma mãe em Israel. Por que você devoraria a herança do SENHOR?”

Joabe respondeu: “Longe de mim, longe de mim, que eu devore ou destrua!
21
O caso não é este. Mas um homem da região montanhosa de Efraim, chamado Seba, filho de Bicri, levantou a mão contra o rei, contra Davi. Entreguem-me apenas ele, e eu me retirarei da cidade.” A mulher disse a Joabe: “Eis que a cabeça dele será jogada para você por cima da muralha.”

Então a mulher foi a todo o povo na sua sabedoria. Eles cortaram a cabeça de Seba, filho de Bicri, e a jogaram para Joabe. Ele tocou a trombeta, e eles se dispersaram da cidade, cada um para a sua tenda. Então Joabe voltou a Jerusalém, para o rei.

Ora, Joabe comandava todo o exército de Israel; Benaia, filho de Joiada, comandava os quereteus e os peleteus;
24
Adorão estava encarregado dos homens sujeitos a trabalhos forçados; Josafá, filho de Ailude, era o cronista;
25
Seva era o escrivão; Zadoque e Abiatar eram sacerdotes;
26
e Ira, o jairita, era o ministro principal de Davi.

A wise woman saves a city

The siege of Abel of Beth Maacah turns on negotiation, not assault. A wise woman calls Joab to the wall, reminds him of the town's old reputation for settling disputes, and asks why he would 'swallow up the LORD's inheritance' (v.19). Joab wants only Sheba; she delivers the rebel's head over the wall. The chapter closes with David's restored cabinet list — order reassembled after revolt.
