2 Timothy 1

Paul writes from a Roman chain, knowing his end is near, to the younger man he calls his beloved child. He recalls Timothy's tears at their parting and the faith handed down through his grandmother Lois and mother Eunice. The plea is personal: don't let the gift cool. Watch how often shame surfaces here. Paul tells Timothy not to be ashamed of the gospel or of Paul's imprisonment, names Phygelus and Hermogenes who deserted him, then praises Onesiphorus, who sought him out in Rome unashamed of his chain.

Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ through the will of God, according to the promise of the life which is in Christ Jesus,

to Timothy, my beloved child: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.

I thank God, whom I serve as my forefathers did, with a pure conscience. How unceasing is my memory of you in my petitions, night and day
4
longing to see you, remembering your tears, that I may be filled with joy;
5
having been reminded of the sincere faith that is in you, which lived first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, in you also.
6
For this cause, I remind you that you should stir up the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands.
7
For God didn’t give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control.
8
Therefore don’t be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner; but endure hardship for the Good News according to the power of God,
9
who saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given to us in Christ Jesus before times eternal,
10
but has now been revealed by the appearing of our Savior, Christ Jesus, who abolished death, and brought life and immortality to light through the Good News.
11
For this I was appointed as a preacher, an apostle, and a teacher of the Gentiles.
12
For this cause I also suffer these things. Yet I am not ashamed, for I know him whom I have believed, and I am persuaded that he is able to guard that which I have committed to him against that day.
13
Hold the pattern of sound words which you have heard from me, in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.
14
That good thing which was committed to you, guard through the Holy Spirit who dwells in us.
15
This you know, that all who are in Asia turned away from me, of whom are Phygelus and Hermogenes.
16
May the Lord grant mercy to the house of Onesiphorus, for he often refreshed me, and was not ashamed of my chain,
17
but when he was in Rome, he sought me diligently and found me
18
(the Lord grant to him to find the Lord’s mercy in that day); and in how many things he served at Ephesus, you know very well.

Dou graças a Deus, a quem sirvo com a consciência pura, assim como fizeram meus antepassados. Como é incessante a lembrança que tenho de você em minhas súplicas, noite e dia,

ansiando por vê-lo, lembrando-me das suas lágrimas, para que eu me encha de alegria;

trazendo à memória a fé sincera que há em você, a qual habitou primeiro em sua avó Lóide e em sua mãe Eunice e, estou persuadido, também habita em você.

Por esta causa, eu o lembro de que você deve reavivar o dom de Deus que está em você pela imposição das minhas mãos.

Pois Deus não nos deu um espírito de covardia, mas de poder, de amor e de domínio próprio.

Portanto, não se envergonhe do testemunho de nosso Senhor, nem de mim, seu prisioneiro; mas suporte os sofrimentos pelo Evangelho segundo o poder de Deus,

que nos salvou e nos chamou com uma santa vocação, não segundo as nossas obras, mas segundo o seu próprio propósito e graça, que nos foi dada em Cristo Jesus antes dos tempos eternos,

mas que agora foi manifestada pelo aparecimento de nosso Salvador, Cristo Jesus, o qual aboliu a morte e trouxe à luz a vida e a imortalidade por meio do Evangelho.

Para isso fui designado pregador, apóstolo e mestre dos gentios.

Por esta causa também sofro estas coisas. Contudo, não me envergonho, pois sei em quem tenho crido, e estou persuadido de que ele é poderoso para guardar o que lhe confiei até aquele dia.

Retenha o padrão das sãs palavras que você ouviu de mim, na fé e no amor que há em Cristo Jesus.
14
Guarde o bom depósito que lhe foi confiado, por meio do Espírito Santo que habita em nós.
15
Você sabe disto: que todos os que estão na Ásia se afastaram de mim, entre os quais estão Fígelo e Hermógenes.
16
Que o Senhor conceda misericórdia à casa de Onesíforo, pois muitas vezes ele me reanimou e não se envergonhou das minhas correntes,
17
pelo contrário, quando esteve em Roma, ele me procurou diligentemente e me encontrou
18
(que o Senhor lhe conceda encontrar a misericórdia do Senhor naquele dia); e em quantas coisas ele serviu em Éfeso, você sabe muito bem.

A faith with named carriers

Rather than abstract doctrine, the chapter roots belief in specific people. The 'sincere faith' Paul sees in Timothy he traces back two generations to Lois and Eunice, women named only here in the New Testament.

That domestic memory sets up the chapter's command in verse 6 to 'stir up the gift,' and the contrast in verse 7 between a spirit of fear and one of power, love, and self-control. Loyalty, not novelty, is what Paul asks Timothy to guard.
