2 Timothy 3

Paul forecasts the last days with a long, unsparing list: people who are lovers of self and money, boastful, without natural affection, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, keeping a form of godliness while denying its power. He tells Timothy plainly to turn away from such people. Against that backdrop he points back to his own example and the Scriptures Timothy has known since infancy. The chapter sharpens into the well-known claim that every Scripture is God-breathed and useful.

But know this: that in the last days, grievous times will come.

For men will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,

without natural affection, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, fierce, not lovers of good,
4
traitors, headstrong, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God,
5
holding a form of godliness but having denied its power. Turn away from these, also.
6
For some of these are people who creep into houses and take captive gullible women loaded down with sins, led away by various lusts,
7
always learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.
8
Even as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so these also oppose the truth, men corrupted in mind, who concerning the faith are rejected.
9
But they will proceed no further. For their folly will be evident to all men, as theirs also came to be.
10
But you followed my teaching, conduct, purpose, faith, patience, love, steadfastness,
11
persecutions, and sufferings—those things that happened to me at Antioch, Iconium, and Lystra. I endured those persecutions. The Lord delivered me out of them all.

Yes, and all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution.
13
But evil men and impostors will grow worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived.
14
But you remain in the things which you have learned and have been assured of, knowing from whom you have learned them.
15
From infancy, you have known the holy Scriptures which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.
16
Every Scripture is God-breathed and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for instruction in righteousness,
17
that each person who belongs to God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.

Mas saiba disto: nos últimos dias, virão tempos difíceis.

Pois os homens serão amantes de si mesmos, amantes do dinheiro, presunçosos, arrogantes, blasfemadores, desobedientes aos pais, ingratos, profanos,

sem afeição natural, implacáveis, caluniadores, sem domínio próprio, cruéis, inimigos do bem,
4
traidores, obstinados, orgulhosos, mais amantes dos prazeres do que amantes de Deus,
5
tendo aparência de piedade, mas negando o seu poder. Afaste-se também destes.

Pois entre estes estão os que se infiltram nas casas e levam cativas mulheres ingênuas, sobrecarregadas de pecados, conduzidas por vários desejos,
7
que estão sempre aprendendo e nunca conseguem chegar ao conhecimento da verdade.
8
Assim como Janes e Jambres se opuseram a Moisés, estes também se opõem à verdade; são homens de mente corrompida, reprovados quanto à fé.
9
Mas eles não irão mais longe. Pois a sua insensatez será evidente a todos os homens, assim como também aconteceu com a daqueles.

Mas você seguiu o meu ensino, conduta, propósito, fé, paciência, amor, perseverança,

perseguições e sofrimentos — aquelas coisas que me aconteceram em Antioquia, Icônio e Listra. Eu suportei essas perseguições. O Senhor me livrou de todas elas.

Sim, e todos os que desejam viver piedosamente em Cristo Jesus sofrerão perseguição.
13
Mas os homens maus e impostores irão de mal a pior, enganando e sendo enganados.
14
Mas você, permaneça nas coisas que aprendeu e das quais tem convicção, sabendo de quem as aprendeu.
15
Desde a infância, você conhece as sagradas Escrituras, que são capazes de torná-lo sábio para a salvação mediante a fé que há em Cristo Jesus.
16
Toda a Escritura é soprada por Deus e útil para o ensino, para a repreensão, para a correção e para a instrução na justiça,
17
para que cada pessoa que pertence a Deus seja completa, totalmente equipada para toda boa obra.

Jannes and Jambres

Verse 8 reaches outside the canon, naming Jannes and Jambres as men who opposed Moses. The Old Testament never names Pharaoh's magicians; Paul draws on a Jewish tradition his readers would recognize to label the deceivers of the last days.

The comparison frames the chapter's contrast: impostors grow worse and worse, while Timothy is to remain in what he learned, knowing the people he learned it from. Persecution at Antioch, Iconium, and Lystra is named as the cost.
