Psalms 122
An Ascents song ascribed to David, set at the moment of arrival: the pilgrim recalls the gladness of the invitation "Let's go to the LORD's house!" and announces that their feet now stand inside Jerusalem's gates (vv.1-2). The city itself is the subject — described as compact and unified, the place where the tribes go up and where David's house holds its thrones for judgment (vv.4-5). Watch the wordplay on Jerusalem's name and "peace."
- 1
I was glad when they said to me, “Let’s go to the LORD’s house!”
- 2
Our feet are standing within your gates, Jerusalem!
- 3
Jerusalem is built as a city that is compact together,
- 4
where the tribes go up, even the LORD’s tribes, according to an ordinance for Israel, to give thanks to the LORD’s name.
- 5
For there are set thrones for judgment, the thrones of David’s house.
- 6
Pray for the peace of Jerusalem. Those who love you will prosper.
- 7
Peace be within your walls, and prosperity within your palaces.
- 8
For my brothers’ and companions’ sakes, I will now say, “Peace be within you.”
- 9
For the sake of the house of the LORD our God, I will seek your good.
- 1
- 2
Nuestros pies estuvieron en tus puertas, oh Jerusalem;
- 3
A prayer that puns
"Pray for the peace of Jerusalem" (v.6) plays on the city's name, which carries the sound of shalom. The closing vow makes the prayer personal: for the sake of "my brothers and companions" and the house of the LORD, the singer will seek the city's good — pilgrimage turned into commitment.
