Psalms 78

Hear my teaching, my people. Turn your ears to the words of my mouth.

I will open my mouth in a parable. I will utter dark sayings of old,
- 3
which we have heard and known, and our fathers have told us.
- 4
We will not hide them from their children, telling to the generation to come the praises of the LORD, his strength, and his wondrous deeds that he has done.
- 5
For he established a covenant in Jacob, and appointed a teaching in Israel, which he commanded our fathers, that they should make them known to their children;
- 6
that the generation to come might know, even the children who should be born; who should arise and tell their children,
- 7
that they might set their hope in God, and not forget God’s deeds, but keep his commandments,
- 8
and might not be as their fathers— a stubborn and rebellious generation, a generation that didn’t make their hearts loyal, whose spirit was not steadfast with God.
- 9
The children of Ephraim, being armed and carrying bows, turned back in the day of battle.
- 10
They didn’t keep God’s covenant, and refused to walk in his law.
- 11
They forgot his doings, his wondrous deeds that he had shown them.
- 12
He did marvelous things in the sight of their fathers, in the land of Egypt, in the field of Zoan.
- 13
He split the sea, and caused them to pass through. He made the waters stand as a heap.
- 14
In the daytime he also led them with a cloud, and all night with a light of fire.
- 15
He split rocks in the wilderness, and gave them drink abundantly as out of the depths.
- 16
He brought streams also out of the rock, and caused waters to run down like rivers.
- 17
Yet they still went on to sin against him, to rebel against the Most High in the desert.
- 18
They tempted God in their heart by asking food according to their desire.
- 19
Yes, they spoke against God. They said, “Can God prepare a table in the wilderness?
- 20
Behold, he struck the rock, so that waters gushed out, and streams overflowed. Can he give bread also? Will he provide meat for his people?”
- 21
Therefore the LORD heard, and was angry. A fire was kindled against Jacob, anger also went up against Israel,
- 22
because they didn’t believe in God, and didn’t trust in his salvation.
- 23
Yet he commanded the skies above, and opened the doors of heaven.
- 24
He rained down manna on them to eat, and gave them food from the sky.
- 25
Man ate the bread of angels. He sent them food to the full.
- 26
He caused the east wind to blow in the sky. By his power he guided the south wind.
- 27
He also rained meat on them as the dust, winged birds as the sand of the seas.
- 28
He let them fall in the middle of their camp, around their habitations.
- 29
So they ate, and were well filled. He gave them their own desire.
- 30
They didn’t turn from their cravings. Their food was yet in their mouths,
- 31
when the anger of God went up against them, killed some of their strongest, and struck down the young men of Israel.
- 32
For all this they still sinned, and didn’t believe in his wondrous works.
- 33
Therefore he consumed their days in vanity, and their years in terror.
- 34
When he killed them, then they inquired after him. They returned and sought God earnestly.
- 35
They remembered that God was their rock, the Most High God, their redeemer.
- 36
But they flattered him with their mouth, and lied to him with their tongue.
- 37
For their heart was not right with him, neither were they faithful in his covenant.
- 38
But he, being merciful, forgave iniquity, and didn’t destroy them. Yes, many times he turned his anger away, and didn’t stir up all his wrath.

He remembered that they were but flesh, a wind that passes away, and doesn’t come again.
- 40
How often they rebelled against him in the wilderness, and grieved him in the desert!
- 41
They turned again and tempted God, and provoked the Holy One of Israel.
- 42
They didn’t remember his hand, nor the day when he redeemed them from the adversary;
- 43
how he set his signs in Egypt, his wonders in the field of Zoan,
- 44
he turned their rivers into blood, and their streams, so that they could not drink.
- 45
He sent among them swarms of flies, which devoured them; and frogs, which destroyed them.
- 46
He also gave their increase to the caterpillar, and their labor to the locust.
- 47
He destroyed their vines with hail, their sycamore fig trees with frost.
- 48
He also gave over their livestock to the hail, and their flocks to hot thunderbolts.
- 49
He threw on them the fierceness of his anger, wrath, indignation, and trouble, and a band of angels of evil.
- 50
He made a path for his anger. He didn’t spare their soul from death, but gave their life over to the pestilence,
- 51
and struck all the firstborn in Egypt, the chief of their strength in the tents of Ham.
- 52
But he led out his own people like sheep, and guided them in the wilderness like a flock.
- 53
He led them safely, so that they weren’t afraid, but the sea overwhelmed their enemies.
- 54
He brought them to the border of his sanctuary, to this mountain, which his right hand had taken.
- 55
He also drove out the nations before them, allotted them for an inheritance by line, and made the tribes of Israel to dwell in their tents.
- 56
Yet they tempted and rebelled against the Most High God, and didn’t keep his testimonies,
- 57
but turned back, and dealt treacherously like their fathers. They were twisted like a deceitful bow.
- 58
For they provoked him to anger with their high places, and moved him to jealousy with their engraved images.
- 59
When God heard this, he was angry, and greatly abhorred Israel,
- 60
so that he abandoned the tent of Shiloh, the tent which he placed among men,
- 61
and delivered his strength into captivity, his glory into the adversary’s hand.
- 62
He also gave his people over to the sword, and was angry with his inheritance.
- 63
Fire devoured their young men. Their virgins had no wedding song.
- 64
Their priests fell by the sword, and their widows couldn’t weep.
- 65
Then the Lord awakened as one out of sleep, like a mighty man who shouts by reason of wine.
- 66
He struck his adversaries backward. He put them to a perpetual reproach.
- 67
Moreover he rejected the tent of Joseph, and didn’t choose the tribe of Ephraim,
- 68
But chose the tribe of Judah, Mount Zion which he loved.
- 69
He built his sanctuary like the heights, like the earth which he has established forever.
- 70
He also chose David his servant, and took him from the sheepfolds;
- 71
from following the ewes that have their young, he brought him to be the shepherd of Jacob, his people, and Israel, his inheritance.
- 72
So he was their shepherd according to the integrity of his heart, and guided them by the skillfulness of his hands.

Ouça meus ensinamentos, meu povo. Vire seus ouvidos para as palavras da minha boca.
- 2
Vou abrir minha boca em uma parábola. Vou proferir ditados sombrios de antigamente,
- 3
que já ouvimos e conhecemos, e nossos pais nos disseram.
- 4
Não vamos escondê-los de seus filhos, dizendo à geração vindoura os louvores de Yahweh, sua força e seus feitos maravilhosos que ele fez.

Pois ele estabeleceu um convênio em Jacob, e nomeou um professor em Israel, que ele comandou a nossos pais, que eles devem dar a conhecer a seus filhos;
- 6
que a geração vindoura talvez saiba, mesmo as crianças que deveriam nascer; que devem se levantar e dizer aos filhos,
- 7
para que eles possam depositar sua esperança em Deus, e não esquecer as obras de Deus, mas cumprir seus mandamentos,
- 8
e podem não ser como seus pais... uma geração teimosa e rebelde, uma geração que não tornou seus corações leais, cujo espírito não era inabalável com Deus.

Os filhos de Efraim, estando armados e carregando arcos, voltaram no dia da batalha.
- 10
Eles não cumpriram o pacto de Deus, e se recusou a andar em sua lei.
- 11
Esqueceram seus feitos, seus feitos maravilhosos que ele lhes havia mostrado.
- 12
Ele fez coisas maravilhosas aos olhos de seus pais, na terra do Egito, no campo de Zoan.
- 13
Ele dividiu o mar, e os fez passar. Ele fez as águas ficarem como uma pilha.
- 14
Durante o dia, ele também os conduziu com uma nuvem, e a noite inteira com uma luz de fogo.
- 15
He rochas rachadas no deserto, e lhes deu bebida em abundância como se estivesse fora das profundezas.
- 16
Ele trouxe riachos também para fora da rocha, e fez com que as águas desaguassem como rios.
- 17
Mesmo assim, eles continuaram a pecar contra ele, para se rebelar contra o Altíssimo no deserto.
- 18
Eles tentaram a Deus em seu coração pedindo comida de acordo com seu desejo.
- 19
Yes, eles falaram contra Deus. Eles disseram: “Deus pode preparar uma mesa no deserto?
- 20
Eis que ele bateu na rocha, de modo que as águas jorraram para fora, e fluxos transbordaram. Ele também pode dar pão? Ele vai fornecer carne para seu povo?”
- 21
Por isso Yahweh ouviu, e ficou furioso. Um incêndio foi acendido contra Jacob, A raiva também foi contra Israel,
- 22
porque eles não acreditavam em Deus, e não confiava na sua salvação.
- 23
Yet ele comandou os céus acima, e abriu as portas do céu.
- 24
Ele chovia maná sobre eles para comer, e lhes deu comida do céu.
- 25
O homem comeu o pão dos anjos. Ele lhes enviou alimentos em sua totalidade.
- 26
Ele causou o vento leste soprando no céu. Pelo seu poder, ele guiou o vento sul.
- 27
Ele também choveu carne sobre eles como poeira, aves aladas como a areia dos mares.
- 28
Ele os deixou cair no meio de seu acampamento, ao redor de suas habitações.
- 29
Então eles comeram, e estavam bem cheios. Ele lhes deu seu próprio desejo.
- 30
Eles não se desviaram de seus anseios. Seus alimentos ainda estavam em suas bocas,
- 31
quando a raiva de Deus se levantou contra eles, mataram alguns de seus mais fortes, e atingiu os jovens de Israel.
- 32
Por tudo isso, eles ainda pecaram, e não acreditava em suas obras maravilhosas.
- 33
Therefore ele consumiu seus dias na vaidade, e seus anos de terror.
- 34
Quando ele os matou, então eles perguntaram por ele. Eles retornaram e buscaram a Deus com seriedade.
- 35
Eles se lembraram que Deus era sua rocha, o Deus Altíssimo, seu redentor.
- 36
But eles o lisonjearam com sua boca, e lhe mentiram com a língua.
- 37
Pois o coração deles não estava bem com ele, nem eram fiéis ao seu pacto.
- 38
Mas ele, sendo misericordioso, perdoou a iniqüidade e não os destruiu. Sim, muitas vezes ele virou sua raiva para longe, e não despertou toda sua fúria.
- 39
Ele lembrou que eles eram apenas carne, um vento que passa, e não volta mais.
- 40
Quantas vezes eles se rebelaram contra ele no deserto, e o entristeceu no deserto!
- 41
Eles se voltaram novamente e tentaram a Deus, e provocou o Santo de Israel.
- 42
Eles não se lembravam de sua mão, nem o dia em que ele os resgatou do adversário;
- 43
como ele colocou seus sinais no Egito, suas maravilhas no campo de Zoan,
- 44
ele transformou seus rios em sangue, e suas correntes, para que não pudessem beber.
- 45
Ele enviou entre eles enxames de moscas, que os devoraram; e sapos, que os destruíram.
- 46
Ele também deu seu aumento para a lagarta, e seu trabalho para o gafanhoto.
- 47
He destruíram suas vinhas com granizo, suas figueiras de sicômoro com geada.
- 48
He também entregaram seu gado ao granizo, e seus rebanhos a trovões quentes.
- 49
Ele jogou sobre eles a ferocidade de sua raiva, ira, indignação e problemas, e um bando de anjos do mal.
- 50
Ele fez um caminho para sua raiva. Ele não poupou a alma deles da morte, mas deram sua vida à pestilência,
- 51
e atingiu todos os primogênitos no Egito, o chefe de sua força nas tendas de Ham.
- 52
Mas ele conduziu seu próprio povo como ovelhas, e os guiou no deserto como um rebanho.
- 53
Ele os conduziu com segurança, para que eles não tivessem medo, mas o mar dominou seus inimigos.
- 54
Ele os trouxe para a fronteira de seu santuário, a esta montanha, que sua mão direita havia levado.
- 55
Ele também expulsou as nações antes delas, os destinou para uma herança por linha, e fez as tribos de Israel morarem em suas tendas.
- 56
No entanto, eles tentaram e se rebelaram contra o Deus Altíssimo, e não guardou seus depoimentos,
- 57
but voltou atrás, e tratou traiçoeiramente como seus pais. Eles foram torcidos como um arco enganoso.
- 58
Pois eles o provocaram à raiva com seus lugares altos, e o levou a ter ciúmes com suas imagens gravadas.
- 59
Quando Deus ouviu isto, ele ficou furioso, e abominava muito Israel,
- 60
so que ele abandonou a tenda de Shiloh, a tenda que ele colocou entre os homens,
- 61
e entregou sua força ao cativeiro, sua glória nas mãos do adversário.
- 62
Ele também entregou seu povo à espada, e estava zangado com sua herança.
- 63
O fogo devorou seus jovens. Suas virgens não tinham canção de casamento.
- 64
Seus sacerdotes caíram pela espada, e suas viúvas não conseguiam chorar.
- 65
Then o Senhor despertou como se estivesse fora do sono, como um homem poderoso que grita por causa do vinho.
- 66
Ele bateu em seus adversários para trás. Ele os reprova perpetuamente.
- 67
Moreover ele rejeitou a tenda de José, e não escolheu a tribo de Efraim,
- 68
Mas escolheu a tribo de Judá, O Monte Zion, que ele amava.
- 69
Ele construiu seu santuário como as alturas, como a terra que ele estabeleceu para sempre.
- 70
Ele também escolheu David, seu criado, e o tirou dos apriscos das ovelhas;
- 71
de seguir as ovelhas que têm seus filhotes, ele o trouxe para ser o pastor de Jacob, seu povo, e Israel, sua herança.
- 72
So ele era seu pastor de acordo com a integridade de seu coração, e os guiou pela habilidade de suas mãos.
