Titus 1

Paul writes to Titus, whom he left on Crete with a specific assignment: finish organizing the young congregations and appoint elders town by town. Most of the chapter lists what such a leader must and must not be — blameless, hospitable, not greedy, not a drunkard — and why this matters on an island already known for trouble. Watch how the list pivots at verse 10. Paul moves from the kind of overseer needed to the reason one is urgently needed: 'unruly men' and 'vain talkers,' especially among the circumcision party, are upending whole households for profit.

Paul, a servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ, according to the faith of God’s chosen ones and the knowledge of the truth which is according to godliness,

in hope of eternal life, which God, who can’t lie, promised before time began;
3
but in his own time revealed his word in the message with which I was entrusted according to the commandment of God our Savior,
4
to Titus, my true child according to a common faith: Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ our Savior.

I left you in Crete for this reason, that you would set in order the things that were lacking and appoint elders in every city, as I directed you—

if anyone is blameless, the husband of one wife, having children who believe, who are not accused of loose or unruly behavior.
7
For the overseer must be blameless, as God’s steward, not self-pleasing, not easily angered, not given to wine, not violent, not greedy for dishonest gain;
8
but given to hospitality, a lover of good, sober minded, fair, holy, self-controlled,
9
holding to the faithful word which is according to the teaching, that he may be able to exhort in the sound doctrine, and to convict those who contradict him.
10
For there are also many unruly men, vain talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision,
11
whose mouths must be stopped: men who overthrow whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for dishonest gain’s sake.
12
One of them, a prophet of their own, said, “Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, and idle gluttons.”
13
This testimony is true. For this cause, reprove them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith,
14
not paying attention to Jewish fables and commandments of men who turn away from the truth.
15
To the pure, all things are pure, but to those who are defiled and unbelieving, nothing is pure; but both their mind and their conscience are defiled.
16
They profess that they know God, but by their deeds they deny him, being abominable, disobedient, and unfit for any good work.

Por esta causa te dejé en Creta, para que corrigieses lo que falta, y pusieses ancianos por las villas, así como yo te mandé:

El que fuere sin crimen, marido de una mujer, que tenga hijos fieles que no estén acusados de disolución, ó contumaces.

Porque es menester que el obispo sea sin crimen, como dispensador de Dios; no soberbio, no iracundo, no amador del vino, no heridor, no codicioso de torpes ganancias;
8
Sino hospedador, amador de lo bueno, templado, justo, santo, continente;
9
Retenedor de la fiel palabra que es conforme á la doctrina: para que también pueda exhortar con sana doctrina, y convencer á los que contradijeren.
10
Porque hay aún muchos contumaces, habladores de vanidades, y engañadores de las almas, mayormente los que son de la circuncisión,
11
A los cuales es preciso tapar la boca; que trastornan casas enteras; enseñando lo que no conviene, por torpe ganancia.
12
Dijo uno de ellos, propio profeta de ellos: Los Cretenses, siempre mentirosos, malas bestias, vientres perezosos.
13
Este testimonio es verdadero: por tanto, repréndelos duramente, para que sean sanos en la fe,
14
No atendiendo á fábulas judaicas, y á mandamientos de hombres que se apartan de la verdad.
15
Todas las cosas son limpias á los limpios; mas á los contaminados é infieles nada es limpio: antes su alma y conciencia están contaminadas.
16
Profésanse conocer á Dios; mas con los hechos lo niegan, siendo abominables y rebeldes, reprobados para toda buena obra.

A Cretan poet, quoted against Crete

Verse 12 cites 'a prophet of their own' — the Cretan poet Epimenides — saying Cretans are 'always liars, evil beasts, idle gluttons.' Paul flatly calls the testimony true, then turns it into a pastoral charge: rebuke them sharply so they may be sound in faith.

The chapter ends with a sharp contrast (v.15-16): to the pure all things are pure, but those who profess to know God deny him by their deeds. Right doctrine without changed conduct is, for Paul, no faith at all.
